Northwest Indian College is a public tribal land-grant community college located in Bellingham, Washington, United States. Here is a detailed introduction to the college:
History:
The college's history can be traced back to the Lummi Indian Aquaculture School, which was established in 1973 to train technicians for fish and crustacean hatcheries operated by Indians in the United States and Canada.
In 1983, the Lummi Nation chartered Lummi Community College as a two-year comprehensive Indian college to provide post-secondary education for Indians in the Pacific Northwest.
In 1988, Lummi Community College applied for accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and was awarded accreditation in 1993. In 1994, the college was designated as a land-grant college, becoming an educational institution recognized by the US government along with 31 other tribal colleges. It was finally renamed Northwest Indian College on January 20, 1989.
