History and Founding
The school was founded in 1847 by the United Christian Church and named after Philip William Otterbein, the founder of the United Brethren. Since 1968, Otterbein University has been associated with the United Methodist Church. In 2010, with the increase of undergraduate and graduate programs, the college was renamed Otterbein University.
