History
The school was founded in 1847. Its predecessor was St. Francis College, which was established by six Franciscan brothers from Roundstone, Ireland. At that time, only men were allowed to enroll.
In 1858, St. Francis College was granted the right to award university degrees, and in 1920 it was granted permission to offer graduate courses.
In 1949, the college amended its charter to allow degrees to be awarded to women, becoming one of the first coeducational Catholic colleges in the United States.
