School History
The school was founded by the Oklahoma State Legislature in 1901 as the Southwestern Normal School. In 1920, it was renamed Southwestern State Normal College. It underwent several name changes between 1939 and 1949. It was officially named Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1974. Sayre Junior College was incorporated in 1987.
