School History
The school was founded in 1911 as the Textile Industrial College by David English Camak, a Methodist minister, to provide high school-level courses for young workers in local textile factories to prepare them for higher education or employment.
In 1927, the school added the first two years of college-level courses and began to offer an associate degree in liberal arts so that graduates could enter senior colleges or enter the workplace with the skills they learned.
In 1940, the school stopped high school courses and was renamed Spartanburg Junior College in 1942, and then Spartanburg Methodist College in 1974.
In 2019, the college further expanded its academic programs, introduced a bachelor's degree program, and became a four-year institution.
