Long history: Founded on June 19, 1912, it was originally named Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State Normal School for Negroes, renamed Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State Normal College in 1925, changed to Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State College in 1927, and officially named Tennessee State University in 1968.
