Introduction and Overview
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is a member of the University of North Carolina system. It is a public university that awards undergraduate and master's degrees. It is located in Pembroke in southeastern North Carolina and has nearly 6,500 students from 24 states in the United States and 17 countries and regions around the world.
History and Founding Time
The school was founded in 1887 as the Croatan Normal School. Its original purpose was to provide education for Indians in North Carolina and train Indian public school teachers. Initially, enrollment was limited to Indians in Robeson County. In 1911, it was renamed Robeson County Indian Normal School, and in 1913 it was renamed Robeson County Cherokee Indian Normal School. In 1926, it became a two-year higher normal school, in 1939 it became a four-year institution, in 1941 it was renamed Pembroke Indian State College, in 1945 it was open to all federally recognized tribal members, in 1949 it was renamed Pembroke State College, in 1953 it began to admit white students, in 1969 it became Pembroke State University, in 1972 it was incorporated into the University of North Carolina system, in 1978 it implemented its first master's degree program, and on July 1, 1996 it was renamed the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
