History

The school's history can be traced back to 1824, when Dr. George McClellan founded Jefferson Medical College, which was officially established in 1825 as a separate medical school established at Jefferson University (now Washington and Jefferson College).

In 1844, the school opened a hospital at Tenth Avenue and Sansom Street, and in 1877 it became one of the earliest medical school affiliated hospitals in the United States. The School of Nursing was established in 1891.

On July 1, 1969, the School of Medicine became an independent school named "Thomas Jefferson University".

On July 1, 2017, Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University officially merged, and the name of the new school after the merger is still Thomas Jefferson University.
