School Overview

Long history: On February 28, 1850, the Deseret State Legislature led by Orson Spencer chartered the establishment of Deseret University, the first state university west of the Missouri River and the predecessor of the University of Utah. It was forced to close due to lack of funds in 1853 and was renamed the University of Utah in 1892.

Large scale: It has about 35,000 students and 2,417 faculty and staff, 97% of whom have master's or doctoral degrees.

Alliance member: It is a member of the Association of American Universities and the Pacific 12 Alliance, the top research university alliance in North America.

Academic strength

Rich majors: It has 18 colleges and nearly 100 departments, 72 majors and more than 90 research disciplines, covering finance, accounting, education, ballet, drama, medicine, computer science and many other fields.

Advantage majors:

Business school: David Eccles School of Business is one of the first business schools accredited by AACSB, and its business school (graduate) ranks 44th in the U.S. News 2019 business school rankings.

Medical School: Known for its research capabilities, as early as 1982, the University of Utah Medical Center completed the world's first artificial heart transplant surgery, and Professor Mario Capecchi of the School of Medicine also won the 2007 Nobel Prize in Biomedicine.
