Wilberforce University is a private liberal arts university in the United States. It is located in Wilberforce, Ohio. It is affiliated with the African Methodist Episcopal Church and participates in the United Negro College Fund.
History and Founding Time
The school was founded in 1856 by the Cincinnati Methodist Episcopal Church and the African Methodist Episcopal Church to provide classical education and teacher training for black youth. It was named after the British abolitionist and politician William Wilberforce. During the American Civil War, due to a large number of students leaving and economic losses, the school closed in 1862. In 1863, the African Methodist Episcopal Church purchased the institution, making it the first university in the United States owned and operated by African Americans.
