History and Founding Time
The school was founded on September 28, 1892. It was originally named Slater Industrial Institute. In 1899, it was renamed Slater Industrial and Slater Normal School. In 1925, it was changed to Winston-Salem Normal College. In 1963, it was renamed Winston-Salem State College. In 1969, it officially became Winston-Salem State University, and on July 1, 1972, it became one of the 16 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina.
