History of the school
Founded in 1886, it was originally led by senior barrister David Bancroft Johnson, with 21 students gathered in a borrowed room in Columbia, South Carolina, with the mission of conducting teacher education.
In 1895, the school moved to its current location and gradually developed into a comprehensive university.
