The college was founded in 1962 with the authorization of the Virginia General Assembly as a two-year branch of Virginia Tech and began its first semester on September 19, 1963. When the Virginia Community College System was established in 1967, Wytheville Community College joined it. Since becoming part of the Virginia Community College System in 1967, the college has had six presidents. The current president, Dean E. Sprinkle, has held this position since 2015.
