Beijing Information Science and Technology University is a key university supported by Beijing. It is a multidisciplinary university with complete information disciplines, distinctive information characteristics, and undergraduate and graduate education as its main body. The school was formed by the merger of the Beijing Institute of Mechanical Industry, which was formerly under the Ministry of Machinery, and the Beijing Institute of Information Engineering, which was formerly under the Ministry of Electronics. The former Beijing Institute of Mechanical Industry originated from the Peking Municipal Advanced Commercial Vocational School in 1937. In 1958, multiple sources converged to form the Beijing Institute of Mechanical Engineering. In 1990, it was renamed Beijing Institute of Mechanical Industry and was under the leadership of the Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry. The former Beijing Institute of Information Engineering originated from the Second Branch of Peking University established in 1978. In 1985, it was renamed Beijing Institute of Information Engineering and was affiliated to the Ministry of Electronics Industry. In 1997, it merged to form the new Beijing Institute of Information Engineering. In 2008, it was officially merged to form Beijing Information Science and Technology University. The school started large-scale undergraduate education in 1958, began to train graduate students in 1981, was approved to establish a postdoctoral research workstation in 2018, was approved to become a doctoral degree-granting institution in 2021, and was approved to establish a postdoctoral research mobile station for instrument science and technology in 2023, building a full-scale, multi-level school-running pattern and talent training system from full-time undergraduate education, master and doctoral graduate education to adult education and international student education. The school currently has five campuses in Shahe, Xiaoying, Jianxiang Bridge, Jintai Road, and Jiuxianqiao, covering an area of more than 810,000 square meters, with 15 secondary teaching units. There are currently 11,019 full-time undergraduates, 3,091 full-time master's students, 58 full-time doctoral students, and 137 international students. In the 87-year history of running schools, the school has always been rooted in China, integrated into the initial development of the national machinery industry and computer industry, and has made indelible contributions to the national defense science and technology cause.
