With the mission of “inheriting and promoting printing civilization and innovating and developing publishing culture”, Beijing Institute of Graphic Arts has pioneered higher education in publishing and printing in China. The school is affiliated to Beijing Municipality and is jointly established by the Beijing Municipal People's Government and the State Administration of Press and Publication. Its predecessor was the Cultural College established by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China in 1958. The Cultural College ceased operations in 1961, and its Printing Technology Department was merged into the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. In 1978, with the approval of the State Council, Beijing was established on the basis of the Printing Technology Department of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. The School of Printing was managed by the former State Publishing Administration; in 2000, the school was placed under the jurisdiction of Beijing.
