Beijing Vocational College of Opera Arts (hereinafter referred to as "Beijing Opera") is a full-time general college approved by the Beijing Municipal People's Government and registered by the Ministry of Education. It is the only public higher vocational college of art in Beijing. The college was founded in 1952 by Mr. Mei Lanfang and other Peking Opera predecessors. In December 2002, the college officially held full-time higher vocational education. In 2006, the Beijing Institute of Art merged with the college to enrich the teaching and scientific research strength. The college recruits students from all over the country and offers multiple professional directions such as Peking Opera, local opera, music, dance, art design and film and television performance. It has developed from a single opera school to a comprehensive art college and has trained nearly 10,000 performing arts talents such as Sun Yumin, Zhang Xuejin, Zhao Baoxiu and Gu Wenyue. In December 2011, the college was rated as a "Beijing Demonstration Higher Vocational College" by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. In 2017, it was rated as "National Advanced Unit for Ideological and Moral Construction of Minors" by the Central Spiritual Civilization Construction Steering Committee. In 2019, it became a construction unit of Beijing's characteristic high-level vocational colleges. At the beginning of 2022, the opera performance major group was selected into the list of construction of Beijing's characteristic high-level backbone majors (groups) of vocational colleges. In recent years, teachers and students of the college have won more than 400 awards in various important national competitions such as the National Vocational College Teachers' Teaching Ability Competition and the Student Skills Competition. Seventy years of development have made outstanding contributions to the inheritance and development of the excellent culture of the Chinese nation.
