Capital Institute of Physical Education is the only sports college in Beijing and is a "high-level characteristic university" supported by the classified development policy of Beijing's universities. Founded in 1956, it was formerly known as Beijing Sports School. It was rebuilt into Beijing Sports Normal College in 1960 and renamed Capital Institute of Physical Education in 2000. In the nearly 70 years since its establishment, it has trained more than 100,000 high-level sports talents for the country and Beijing, and a large number of alumni have become pillars and backbones in the fields of sports and education. The school has ranked third in the country for three consecutive years in the ranking of Chinese sports universities by the Shanghai Ranking. In June 2021, the construction of the "Beijing International Olympic Academy" based on the Capital Institute of Physical Education was approved by the International Olympic Committee and the Central Organization Department, becoming the third International Olympic Academy in the world established by a national government decision, and the first humanities and knowledge heritage of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics. The school has a complete talent training system for undergraduate, master and doctoral students. It started large-scale undergraduate education in 1960, was approved as a master's degree awarding unit in 1993, started joint training of doctoral students in 2003, and was approved in 2012 to serve the national special doctoral talent training project of "Youth Physical Movement Function Training". It began to independently train doctoral students, and was approved to add a doctoral degree awarding unit in 2018. There are 9 teaching units including the School of Physical Education and Training, the School of Sports Science and Health, the School of Wushu and Performance, the School of Leisure and Social Sports, the School of Management and Communication, the School of Ice and Snow Sports, the School of Continuing Education, the School of International Education, and the School of Marxism. There are 2 directly affiliated research institutions including the Sports Artificial Intelligence Research Institute and the Sports and Medical Integration Innovation Center. The total number of students of all kinds is about 5,400, including about 3,600 undergraduates, about 1,000 doctoral and master's students, and about 800 adult education students, affiliated competitive sports school students, and international students. The comprehensive strength of the school's disciplines ranks among the top universities (disciplines) of the same type in China. It has two first-level disciplines, sports and psychology, of which sports is a high-end discipline in Beijing universities. In the 2023 Soft Science China Best Discipline Ranking, sports degrees ranked fifth among 108 universities in the country. The school has a total of 6 second-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 2 professional degree authorization points, of which 3 disciplines, including sports education and training, sports humanities and sociology, and sports human science, are key (construction) disciplines in Beijing. The school's professional layout is distinctive. A total of 15 undergraduate majors are offered, of which 9 majors, including sports education, sports training, martial arts and traditional national sports, social sports guidance and management, sports economics and management, sports human science, leisure sports, journalism, and dance performance, are national first-class professional construction points, 2 majors, including sports education and sports training, are national characteristic majors, and 3 majors, including sports rehabilitation, physical training, and public utilities management, are first-class professional construction points in Beijing. In addition to the three newly-established majors, including sports tourism, ice and snow sports, and e-sports competition and management, the other 12 majors are all selected into the national "Double Ten Thousand Plan". National first-class undergraduate professional construction points account for 60%, ranking first among sports colleges in the country. The school has been deeply engaged in the construction of talent cultivation. It has 2 national teaching teams, 2 national quality courses, 1 national quality resource sharing course, 6 national first-class courses, 22 national planning textbooks, 1 national off-campus practical education base for college students, and 3 textbooks won the first national textbook construction award. In recent years, the school has actively explored the reform and innovation of talent cultivation models. It is one of the first batch of universities to build the "High-level International Talent Cultivation Innovation and Practice Base" of the Ministry of Education. It has won more than 80 municipal achievements, including 6 Beijing Education and Teaching Achievement Awards, 8 Beijing University Course Ideological and Political Demonstration Courses, Teaching Masters and Teams, 3 Beijing Excellent Undergraduate Education Teams, 20 Beijing Undergraduate Teaching Reform and Innovation Projects, 21 Quality Courses, 19 Quality Textbooks, Courseware, etc., and 1 Beijing Education Informatization Integration Application Demonstration Base. Foreign expert Laszlo Wajda won the 16th Beijing "Great Wall Friendship Award". The school vigorously promotes sports science and technology innovation, adheres to the world's sports science and technology frontier, the country's major strategic needs, and the main battlefield of sports and health, and builds the country's first "Sports, Medicine and Engineering Integration High-tech Innovation Center", comprehensively deploys in the fields of competitive sports, mass fitness, school sports, etc., and creates a "seven-in-one" international high-tech innovation platform for scientific and technological innovation, engineering application, achievement transformation, industrial upgrading, discipline construction, talent training, and social services, and strives to create a "sports, medicine and engineering" interdisciplinary research highland and innovative talent training highland. The school has hosted 4 national key R&D plan projects and 3 major projects of the National Social Science Fund for 5 consecutive years. 2 results have won national scientific research awards, and major scientific research results have made breakthrough progress. The Scientific Training and Active Health Research Center was approved as a "Healthy Beijing Demonstration Base", and "Sports Medicine Engineering" was approved as a cross-disciplinary platform for municipal universities. The Sports Artificial Intelligence Committee of the China Artificial Intelligence Society settled in the school, successfully held the first National Sports Artificial Intelligence Conference and the first China Sports and Health Conference, and the "Sports, Medicine and Engineering" integrated innovation development has played a leading and exemplary role in the country. The school strives to create high-level academic journals. The "Journal of Capital Institute of Physical Education" hosted by it is a Chinese sports journal in the "Overview of Chinese Core Journals" and a "National University Social Science Excellent Journal". The school actively serves the implementation of national strategies and the development of the capital in the new era. Focusing on competitive sports, multiple scientific research teams serve to ensure the training and competition of the national team. In the past five years, they have helped the national team win more than 40 Olympic medals. Nearly 2,000 teachers and students have served to ensure major international sports events such as the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Chengdu Universiade, and the Hangzhou Asian Games. They are engaged in event organization and refereeing, scientific and technological service guarantee, news broadcasting, timing and scoring, and volunteer services for the games. Focusing on school sports, the school takes serving the reform of physical education in primary and secondary schools in Beijing and the physical health day monitoring of primary and secondary school students as the starting point, and carries out pilot applications in 48 schools in 10 districts of Beijing, comprehensively assisting students in improving their sports and physical health levels, and promoting the construction of a healthy Beijing. The school promotes international exchanges and cooperation with high quality. Comprehensively promote the construction of the national brand and international platform of the Beijing International Olympic Academy, and continuously optimize the layout of international cooperation. Since its establishment, it has established exchanges and cooperation relations with more than 60 universities and scientific research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions around the world, including Loughborough University, Imperial College London, University of British Columbia, University of Southern Denmark, Cologne Sports Institute, National Institute of Genetics, and International Olympic Academy of Greece. It took the lead in establishing the China-Russia Sports College Alliance, and currently 26 Chinese and 14 Russian colleges have joined. It has the world's only Olympic Education Museum, which has been selected as a national popular science education base and the first batch of national sports popular science bases. It has received more than 100,000 Chinese and foreign visitors and learners, becoming a base for the continuous development of Olympic education and a window to show the world the achievements of my country's Olympic education.
