The China Foreign Affairs University is a small-scale, high-level, distinctive university directly under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which aims to serve China's diplomatic cause and cultivate first-class diplomatic and foreign affairs talents. It was established in 1955 with the approval of the Party Central Committee and Chairman Mao at the initiative of Premier Zhou Enlai. Premier Zhou personally wrote the name of the university, and Marshal Chen Yi, then Vice Premier of the State Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs, served as the first president of the China Foreign Affairs University. Since its establishment, our university has always received the cordial care of national leaders. Premier Zhou Enlai, Vice Premier Chen Yi, Vice Premier Qian Qichen, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, State Councilor Yang Jiechi, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and successive foreign ministers have visited the university many times to inspect and guide the work. On the occasion of the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the establishment of the university, President Jiang Zemin, Premier Li Peng, Vice Premier Li Lanqing, Vice Premier Qian Qichen and other party and state leaders wrote inscriptions and sent congratulatory letters for the university, expressing their high expectations for the university. In September 2012, Comrade Wen Jiabao, then Premier of the State Council, personally wrote "Cradle of Chinese Diplomats" for the university. The China Foreign Affairs University conscientiously implements the Party's educational policy, takes the 16-character policy proposed by Premier Zhou Enlai to diplomats "Stand firm, master policies, be familiar with business, and strictly abide by discipline" as the school motto, takes the spirit of the inscription "Based on the motherland, look to the world, face the future, and cultivate talents" written by Comrade Jiang Zemin for our college and the "Face the world, face the future, face the society, and face the reality" proposed by Comrade Qian Qichen for our college as the school-running policy, and takes the training of high-level diplomatic and foreign affairs talents as the school-running goal. We continue to increase the intensity of teaching reform, reform the school-running model and system, broaden the professional direction, implement the credit system, major and minor system and double degree system, adjust the curriculum, update the teaching content, and continuously improve the teaching quality and teaching level as well as the comprehensive quality of students. Our college adheres to the school-running philosophy of distinctive diplomatic characteristics and outstanding foreign language advantages, and is committed to cultivating outstanding diplomatic and foreign affairs talents who "love the motherland, know the world, are proficient in majors, are proficient in foreign languages, and are high-quality and compound". The college advocates the style of study that combines theory with practice, seeks truth from facts, and is hardworking and rigorous, and emphasizes the all-round development of morality, intelligence and physique. In terms of ideological and political morality, we attach importance to self-cultivation education, especially patriotism, collectivism, socialism, national awareness, and organizational discipline education. In terms of teaching, we attach importance to both basic theoretical teaching and basic skills training and ability cultivation; we attach importance to improving foreign language proficiency and mastering basic knowledge of diplomatic business, economy, law, etc., and cultivate compound talents who combine politics and business, Chinese and foreign languages, theory and practice. In order to meet the needs of various talents for my country's reform and opening up, foreign affairs and foreign-related work, our college adopts a "multi-standard, multi-level, and multi-form" school-running system to recruit doctoral students, master's students, and undergraduates. Our college has established 9 major teaching units, including the Department of Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs Management, the Department of English, the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of International Law, the School of International Economics, the Basic Teaching Department, the Graduate Department, the Institute of International Relations, and the School of International Education, as well as more than 30 research centers, including the Institute of Asian Studies and the Institute of International Law. Our college is the first university in the country to establish an undergraduate major in diplomacy, and it is also one of the first national institutions to award master's and doctoral degrees in international relations and diplomacy. At present, the school has two national key disciplines, namely, international relations and diplomacy. English language and literature is a national specialty. Political science (first-level discipline) is a high-tech discipline in Beijing. It has one postdoctoral mobile station, one first-level doctoral program, three first-level master programs, four second-level doctoral programs, 15 second-level master programs, three professional degree-granting rights, and 11 undergraduate majors. Two national first-level societies, the China International Relations Society and the China International Law Society, as well as the Beijing "Foreign Exchange and Foreign Affairs Management Research Base" are located in our school. Our school has signed cooperation agreements (memorandums of understanding) with 152 universities (institutions) in 76 countries (regions) abroad, of which 84 have carried out substantive cooperation. Every year, some outstanding undergraduates and postgraduates are selected to exchange and study at universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Switzerland and other countries. In January 2013, our school signed an agreement with the University of French Polynesia to jointly establish a Confucius Institute. Over the past 60 years since its establishment, China Foreign Affairs University has been committed to serving the overall situation of China's diplomacy and the frontline of diplomacy, and has trained more than 20,000 outstanding graduates for the country, including more than 500 ambassadors abroad, making important contributions to the diplomatic cause of New China. Wherever the five-star red flag is raised in the world, there are graduates of our school. With the continuous enhancement of my country's comprehensive national strength, the country's need for outstanding diplomatic talents is increasing day by day. The scale and teaching conditions of the campus located on Zhanlan Road, Xicheng District, Beijing are far from meeting the needs. Under the care of the Party Central Committee, the State Council and the Party Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the construction of the Shahe Campus of China Foreign Affairs University was completed and put into use in September 2012. The new campus has spacious and bright classrooms, complete and modern facilities, and a pleasing campus environment, which reflects the characteristic school-running philosophy of China Foreign Affairs University, which is open, inclusive, rational, and full of humanistic care. On September 10, 2012, then Premier of the State Council Wen Jiabao came to the new campus to attend the unveiling ceremony of the bronze statues of Premier Zhou Enlai and Marshal Chen Yi. He delivered an important speech and expressed his expectations for the college: "China Foreign Affairs University must have first-class faculty, first-class disciplines, and first-class concepts, and deliver first-class talents to the diplomatic cause of the motherland." On January 3, 2014, the signing ceremony for the joint construction of China Foreign Affairs University by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education was held at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. According to the "Agreement on the Joint Construction of China Foreign Affairs University by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education", the two ministries established a coordination mechanism to increase support for the college in terms of policy support, funding guarantee, discipline construction, scientific research, talent training, cadre training, and faculty team construction. On September 21, 2017, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and the National Development and Reform Commission issued the "Notice on the Announcement of the List of World-Class Universities and First-Class Discipline Construction Universities and Construction Disciplines", and China Foreign Affairs University successfully joined the ranks of the first batch of 95 world-class discipline construction universities in the country! Building a world-class discipline university is the glorious mission entrusted to China Foreign Affairs University by the Party and the State, and China Foreign Affairs University has ushered in new development opportunities. Our college actively explores and innovates, explores new ways to cultivate compound diplomatic and foreign affairs talents, comprehensively improves the level of discipline construction, deepens teaching reform, and improves teaching quality. All faculty and students of the college work together to strive to become "an incubator for China's diplomatic talent team in the new era, a pioneer in China's diplomatic theory research and innovation in the new era, and a new force for foreign exchanges and cooperation in the new era", and deliver first-class talents to the diplomatic cause of the motherland.
