The Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera is the first Chinese opera school established in the new China. It is also the only independent university in the country that trains senior professionals in opera art. It is the highest institution of Chinese opera education. The academy plays a leading and exemplary role in the field of Chinese opera education with its most complete majors, the most sound training system, the most concentrated high-quality teachers, the largest number of high-end professional talents, and the greatest contribution in the industry. It is known as the "cradle of high-end opera talent training in China". There are currently 2,402 students, including 385 postgraduates and 2,017 undergraduates; 431 faculty and staff, including 278 full-time teachers. The predecessor of the academy was the Experimental School of Opera under the Drama Improvement Bureau of the Ministry of Culture of the Central People's Government, which was established on January 28, 1950. The first principal was Tian Han. It was officially named the Chinese Opera School in January 1955. In October 1978, it was restructured into the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera with the approval of the State Council and enrolled the first batch of undergraduates. In 2000, the academy was transferred to Beijing. In 2014, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Beijing Municipal People's Government jointly established the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera. After years of hard work, the academy has established a relatively complete discipline and professional system. There are currently three first-level disciplines, "Arts", "Opera and Quyi" and "Music", professional degree master's programs, 15 majors, and 28 undergraduate majors. Among them, Drama and Opera is a key discipline in Beijing, and Drama and Film and Television are selected as "Beijing Universities High-tech Discipline Construction Points"; Performance and Drama and Film Art Design are national-level characteristic professional construction points, and Drama and Film Literature and Music Performance are Beijing-level characteristic professional construction points; Performance, Drama and Film Literature, Drama and Film Art Design, Composition and Composition Technology Theory, and Drama and Film Directing are national-level first-class undergraduate professional construction points; Drama and Film Art Design, Composition and Composition Technology Theory, Animation, Art Management, Music Performance, Costume and Costume Design are provincial-level first-class undergraduate professional construction points; Performance is a "Beijing Universities Key Construction First-class Major". The academy has 10 teaching units, including Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera Department, Performance Department, Directing Department, Music Department, Opera Literature Department, Stage Art Department, Art Management and Cultural Exchange Department, Ideological and Political Theory Course Teaching Department, Continuing Education Department, and Graduate Class for Outstanding Young Peking Opera Actors, as well as 3 teaching support institutions, 14 management institutions and an affiliated high school. It has established a talent training system for secondary education, undergraduate education, graduate education, continuing education, and international student education in opera, with the coverage of opera types continuously expanding, and the connotation, characteristics, and differentiated development continuously deepening. Under the cordial care of the Party Central Committee and successive leaders, the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera has gone through an extraordinary development process. The college has always adhered to the leadership of the Party, adhered to the socialist direction of running schools, insisted on educating people for the Party and the country, insisted on taking root in the land of China to run opera education, and upheld the school motto of "virtue and art, carry forward the past and open up the future", and carried forward the tradition of "passing on the torch, keeping the integrity and innovating", and always took it as its own responsibility to inherit and carry forward the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation, and provided a large number of professional talents for art academies, research institutions, art schools, and art management departments across the country, and made outstanding contributions to the prosperity and development of the opera industry in New China and the inheritance and innovation of the excellent traditional Chinese culture. On October 23, 2020, General Secretary Xi Jinping wrote back to the teachers and students of the college, fully affirmed the gratifying achievements made by the college in running schools, and expressed his earnest expectations for the inheritance and development of opera art. He emphasized that opera is a treasure of Chinese culture, and the key to the prosperity and development of the opera industry lies in people. It is hoped that the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera will take the 70th anniversary of its founding as a new starting point, fully implement the Party's education policy, implement the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, guide teachers and students to strengthen cultural confidence, carry forward fine traditions, adhere to the principle of keeping the truth and making innovations, explore the true meaning of art in teaching and learning, and sharpen their original intentions in serving the people, so as to make new and greater contributions to inheriting the excellent traditional Chinese culture and building a socialist cultural power. On December 31, 2021, the academy held its third party congress and made arrangements for the academy's development in the next five years. At present, the academy is following the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important reply letter, and is deepening the construction of "Opera Talent Training Center, Opera Theory Research Center, Opera Inheritance and Innovation Center, and Sino-foreign Drama Exchange and Cooperation Center", striving to make unremitting efforts towards the goal of becoming a first-class Chinese and world-renowned opera art university.
