Chongqing University is a national key university directly managed by the Central Government and directly under the Ministry of Education. The school was founded in 1929 with the vision of building a "complete and profound university". By the 1940s, it had developed into a comprehensive university with a complete range of liberal arts, sciences, industry, commerce, and forensic medicine. After the national adjustment of departments in 1952, it became a multidisciplinary university focusing on engineering. In 1960, it was designated as a national key university.
