Fenyang College of Shanxi Medical University, formerly known as Fenyang Senior Nursing School of Shanxi Province, was founded by the North China Congregational Church of the United States in 1923. In 1937, it was registered with the Ministry of Health of the Nanjing National Government and the Chinese Nurses Association, becoming one of the only three senior nursing schools in the country at that time (Peking Union Medical College, Sichuan West China and Shanxi Fenyang). It was restored and rebuilt in 1985 and changed to its current name in 1996. The school covers an area of 1,086.95 acres and a total construction area of 308,300 square meters. The campus is full of flowers and trees, with elegant environment and picturesque scenery. The school is a multi-disciplinary, multi-professional, multi-level and distinctive higher medical school with two levels of master's and undergraduate education. It has 13 undergraduate majors including clinical medicine, nursing, stomatology, medical imaging, anesthesiology, optometry, medical laboratory technology, optometry, rehabilitation therapy, medical laboratory technology, midwifery, health service and management and preventive medicine. There are 13 disciplines that recruit postgraduate students, including nursing, human anatomy and histology, biochemistry and molecular biology, physiology, pathology and pathophysiology, clinical laboratory diagnosis, pharmacology, internal medicine, surgery, neurology, otolaryngology, public health, and radiology. The school currently has 971 full-time teachers, including 406 full-time teachers, 280 clinical teachers in affiliated hospitals, and 285 part-time teachers hired from outside. Among the full-time teachers, there are 591 full-time teachers with senior professional and technical positions, 487 full-time teachers with postgraduate qualifications, 2 doctoral supervisors, 39 master supervisors, and 6 famous teachers in Shanxi Province. The school has hired 17 part-time professors and academic consultants with certain status and influence at home and abroad, represented by Li Jixing of Peking University and Mark Harrison of Oxford University in the United Kingdom. There are more than 27,000 teaching instruments and equipment, with a value of 115 million yuan. The library currently has 857,000 paper books, 1.3 million electronic books, and 893 Chinese and foreign periodicals. The school is accelerating the construction of a smart campus, and the campus wireless network is fully covered. The school currently has 1 directly affiliated tertiary-level A-class general hospital, 2 affiliated hospitals, and 104 off-campus practical teaching bases. There are 3 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and 5 school-level key laboratories on campus. The school founded and (co-)sponsored "Nursing Research", co-sponsored "Journal of Social Sciences of Higher Education Institutions in Shanxi Province", and co-sponsored "Chinese Medical Education" and other publications. It is a governing unit of "China Higher Medical Education". The "History of the Development of Nursing in China" with more than 460,000 words organized and compiled by the school filled the domestic gap and was well received by 1,200 Chinese and foreign nursing experts at the 90th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Chinese Nursing Association. The school recruits students from 26 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country. It currently has 10,086 full-time undergraduate students and 133 full-time master's students. It has graduated 20 master's students and 21 undergraduates, and has sent more than 40,000 talents of all levels and types to the society. Since its establishment, it has cultivated outstanding talents with a certain reputation and influence at home and abroad, represented by Wang Guiying and Yang Hui, winners of the "Nightingale Award", and He Hua, "National Advanced Individual in Anti-epidemic". The employment situation of students is good, and the annual average employment rate ranks among the top similar colleges in the province. The quality of students is generally praised by employers. Every year, nearly 30% of students are admitted to master's programs in first-class medical schools and scientific research institutes across the country, and the school's popularity and reputation are increasing. In order to enable poor students to complete their studies smoothly, the school has established a student aid guarantee system consisting of student loans, national scholarships, national inspirational scholarships, national grants, school outstanding student scholarships, and work-study positions. The undergraduate nursing major is a national first-class professional construction point, a national characteristic major, a Shanxi brand major, and a key supported discipline in Shanxi Province; the undergraduate clinical medicine, medical laboratory technology, stomatology, and anesthesiology majors are national first-class professional construction points; the undergraduate optometry, rehabilitation therapy, medical imaging, and medical laboratory technology majors are first-class professional construction points in Shanxi Province; the undergraduate nursing, medical laboratory technology, and optometry majors are characteristic majors of higher education institutions in Shanxi Province; the undergraduate medical laboratory technology major is an advantageous major in Shanxi Province. The Clinical Nursing Experimental Teaching Center, the Medical Laboratory Experimental Teaching Center, and the Basic Medicine Experimental Teaching Center are the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers of General Higher Education Institutions in Shanxi Province. The teaching team of the nursing major is a "National March 8th Red Flag Collective" and an "Excellent Teaching Team in Shanxi Province". The school has won first and second prizes and honors such as excellent instructors in national and provincial nursing, inspection, anatomy, midwifery and other skill competitions. The school adheres to collaborative innovation and development, continuously deepens school-enterprise and inter-school cooperation, cooperates with Tianjin Medical University School of Medical Laboratory, Shenzhen BGI Institute, Shanxi High-tech Medical Testing Center, and Shanxi Dean Medical Testing Center Co., Ltd. to run schools, and constantly explores the integration model of government, industry, academia and research. The school strengthens foreign cooperation in running schools, successfully signed a memorandum of cooperation with New Lanarkshire College, the University of Aberdeen, and the University of Adelaide, Australia, and reached a cooperation intention with Haigs University, the United States, and the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork, Ireland, effectively realizing resource sharing and complementary advantages.
