Gansu Agricultural University is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the People's Government of Gansu Province, one of the top 100 universities in the central and western regions under national key construction, and a high-level university in Gansu Province. Its predecessor was the National Veterinary College founded in Lanzhou in October 1946. In 1950, it was renamed Northwest Veterinary College; in 1951, it was renamed Northwest College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine; in 1958, it merged with the Gansu Agricultural College under preparation to form Gansu Agricultural University. The school is located in Anning District, Lanzhou City, covering an area of 2,378 acres (including the experimental base), and the school building area is 700,000 square meters. There are now 23 colleges (teaching departments). Agricultural sciences, plant and animal sciences have entered the top 1% of the world's ESI subject rankings, and herbology has been selected into the national first-class discipline breakthrough project of Gansu provincial universities. There are currently 17,530 undergraduate students, 4,023 master’s students, and 688 doctoral students. So far, it has trained more than 230,000 senior professionals of various types for the country, and has produced a large number of well-known alumni such as Yang Ziheng, the first Chinese academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Shang Yongfeng and Chen Hualan, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Nan Zhibiao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has published more than 12,000 papers in domestic and foreign academic journals, including more than 4,000 high-level papers. At present, the school is undertaking more than 390 national-level projects such as the National Key Research and Development Plan and the National Natural (Social) Science Foundation. There are 1 national key laboratory, 1 key laboratory for forage germplasm innovation and new variety breeding of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (co-constructed by the ministry and province), 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration for high-cold rodent control. There is 1 controlled engineering technology research center, 14 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 52 provincial key laboratories, engineering laboratories and various research centers (bases) jointly built by the province and the ministry. The school attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation and implements an international development strategy. It has maintained joint student training, academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation with more than 60 universities and scientific research institutions in more than 20 countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Peru, Ghana, and South Korea, and has established the "China-US Grassland" in cooperation with the United States and other countries. "Research Center for Sustainable Development of Animal Husbandry", conducts cooperative research with international institutions such as the International Potato Center, the International Corn and Wheat Improvement Center, and the International Seabuckthorn Research Center, and has successively joined the China-Central and Eastern European Universities Association, China Agricultural Universities Silk Road Agriculture Educational Science and Technology Innovation Alliance, “One Belt and One Road” University Strategic Alliance Ecological Sub-Alliance and “One Belt and One Road” Ecological Water Conservancy and New Energy Cooperation Alliance. There are programs for visiting scholars sent by the school, double degree programs for students to study in the United States, and Gannon President’s Scholarship for studying abroad. The school’s international exchanges are becoming increasingly active, and its degree of internationalization is constantly improving.
