Gansu Iron and Steel Vocational and Technical College, located in the beautiful national civilized city - Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province, was founded by Jiuquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co., Ltd. It is the only higher vocational college in Gansu Province currently run by a state-owned enterprise. Its predecessor was the Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company Staff University, which was founded in 1978. The Iron and Steel College is jointly run by Gansu Metallurgical Advanced Technology College (Gansu Metallurgical Technician College). Gansu Metallurgical Advanced Technology College was founded in 1973 and is a provincial-level financially funded institution. The two schools implement the integrated operation of secondary and higher vocational education. Since 2002, the Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company Staff Training Center, Gansu Iron and Steel Vocational and Technical College, Gansu Metallurgical Advanced Technology College (Gansu Metallurgical Technician College) and other institutions have been jointly operated. At present, an integrated school-running model of "multiple brands, one team, and resource sharing" is implemented. It has successively won many honorary titles such as the national "Lei Feng Spirit Seed Volunteer Service Demonstration Unit", "Provincial Advanced Collective for Caring for the Next Generation", and "Gansu Civilized Unit". The college is divided into two campuses, Donghu (new campus) and Lanxin (old campus), with a total area of 855 acres (of which Donghu campus covers an area of 660 acres and Lanxin campus covers an area of 195 acres), and a building area of 153,000 square meters (of which Donghu campus covers an area of 118,000 square meters and Lanxin campus covers an area of 35,000 square meters). It has complete facilities and fully functional education and teaching, internships, training, living and student activity venues. There are 287 faculty and staff members and 185 full-time teachers. There are a large number of "dual-qualified famous teachers" such as Teacher Lv Jie, "the most beautiful teacher in the country" and "a model of teaching and educating people in the country", and Teacher Liang Yong, "the winner of the National May 1st Labor Medal". There are 5,878 students in the two schools, including 4,200 junior college students of Gansu Iron and Steel Vocational and Technical College and 1,678 technical school students of Gansu Metallurgical Advanced Technology College. The college has teaching departments (departments): Welding Engineering Department, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Department, Resources and Energy Engineering Department, Modern Commerce and Service Department, Information Engineering Department, Marxism College, Basic Department, Secondary Vocational Department, etc. At present, the higher vocational college offers 29 majors such as ferrous metallurgy technology, welding technology and automation, electrical automation technology, mechanical manufacturing and automation, industrial robot technology, automobile inspection and maintenance technology, fire engineering, etc.; the technical school offers 16 majors such as electrical automation equipment installation and maintenance, mechanical equipment maintenance, welding processing, steel smelting, computer network application, etc. The college has complete functions for professional ability certification and continuing education. There are 2 national professional ability evaluation institutions, Gansu Province Special Operation Jiugang Training Station, Gansu Province Special Equipment Welder Examination Institution, National Marketing Professional Personnel Qualification Certification Workstation, Safety Production Training Institution (National Secondary Qualification), National CAD Grade Examination Certification and other institutions. The college cooperates with ordinary universities such as Beijing University of Science and Technology and Lanzhou University of Technology to open up the channel for academic advancement and build a platform for learners' lifelong learning. In recent years, the Iron and Steel College has focused on improving the college's connotation construction and social service capabilities by creating distinctive backbone majors and cultivating skilled masters. In 2021, the Metallurgy and Materials Professional Group was selected as the "High-level Professional Group" (A-level) in Gansu Province. One national backbone major and three provincial backbone majors have been established. 13 provincial-level boutique online open courses have been established, and 12 provincial-level vocational education reform projects have been presided over. One China training base for the World Skills Competition, one national-level welding and metallurgy production training base, one national-level high-skilled talent training base, one Gansu Provincial Professional and Technical Personnel Continuing Education Base, one national-level welding application technology collaborative innovation center, and one provincial-level "Intelligent Manufacturing and VR Simulation Application Technology" Collaborative Innovation Center. The Provincial Department of Science and Technology approved the pilot project of "Provincial and Municipal Co-construction of Gansu Metallurgical Technology Key Laboratory", and built key laboratories (training) bases such as the Jiayuguan Metallurgical Key Laboratory. It took the lead in establishing the "Gansu Welding Professional Vocational Education Group", which has one provincial comprehensive "mass innovation space", one national master studio ("Lv Jie Welding Innovation Skills Master Studio"), and two provincial master studios ("Liang Yong Master Studio" and "Vocational Education Zhang Peng Master Studio"). In recent years, the school has organized teachers to participate in the provincial teaching ability competition and skills competition and won 10 first prizes and 16 second prizes. Among them, it won 1 second prize and 1 third prize in the National Vocational School Teaching Ability Competition; trained 2 Chinese coaches for the World Skills Competition (Lv Jie and Zhang Peng); 4 Gansu Provincial Technical Models, 6 Jiayuguan City Technical Models; 1 provincial teaching master; 1 provincial innovative teaching team. Organized students to participate in the first World Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China Vocational Skills Competition and won 2 awards; 4 second prizes (welding technology competition) and 5 third prizes (welding technology competition, mechanical assembly technology competition) in the National Vocational School Skills Competition; 141 provincial skills competitions won awards. The college adheres to the principle of giving equal importance to academic education and social training, and undertakes various employee training and professional qualification certification for nearly 30,000 people of Jiugang Group Corporation and its branches and subsidiaries every year. The college follows the school management policy of "strict management and deep love, lenient admission and excellent output" and the value of "committed to cultivating young people who know right from wrong, are skilled, well-educated, and strong, so that they can go to society with sunshine and confidence", and makes full use of the natural advantages of enterprise-run schools and the integration of production and education, and has cultivated a large number of outstanding graduates represented by Du Jun, a "national model worker", a representative of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and the first "worker professor" in Gansu Province. The college graduates have good employment prospects, and have formed an employment network based in the Jiajiu area, serving Gansu, and radiating large and medium-sized central enterprises and state-owned enterprises across the country. There are 102 school-enterprise cooperation alliance enterprises, and targeted training agreements for school-enterprise cooperation have been signed with Jiugang Group, China National Nuclear Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, China National Petroleum Corporation, Volkswagen and many other enterprises, realizing targeted training and precise employment. Since 2005, a total of 13,900 technical and skilled talents of various types have been trained, including more than 7,000 to Jiugang Company and nearly 10,000 to Jiujiang area. The employment rate of graduates in 2020 reached 83.26%, providing talent support for promoting rapid and high-quality development of regional economy and society.
