The school has a long history and ample space for running schools. Guangxi Medical University was founded on November 21, 1934 and is located in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The school was formerly known as Guangxi Provincial Medical College. It was renamed Guangxi Medical College in November 1949. In April 1953, it was renamed Guangxi Medical College with the approval of the Ministry of Health. In May 1996, it was renamed Guangxi Medical University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. Since its establishment, the school has moved to seven locations. In July 1954, it moved from Guilin back to its current location in Nanning.
