Guangzhou Maritime College was founded in 1964. It is a public undergraduate college managed by the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government. It is the only independent maritime undergraduate college in South China. It is a "civilized campus" unit in Guangdong Province, a green school in Guangdong Province, a "strong characteristic" construction university in Guangdong Province's "Chongbuqiang" plan, a project construction unit for the master's degree awarding in Guangdong Province, and a provincial pilot unit for the construction of grassroots people's armed forces in Guangdong Province. It has won the title of "Advanced Unit for Recruitment Work" in Guangdong Province for six consecutive years. It is a maritime college recognized by the International Maritime Organization, an important training base for senior talents in the shipping industry in South China, and is known as the "Cradle of Navigators". In December 2020, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Guangdong Province jointly issued the "Plan for Promoting the Development of Higher Education Cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area", which clearly stated "promoting the construction of universities such as Guangzhou Jiaotong University" and "supporting Guangzhou in building Guangzhou Jiaotong University", and included the construction of Guangzhou Jiaotong University in Guangzhou in the list of key projects. In May 2021, the "Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of Guangzhou and the Long-Term Goals for 2035" proposed: accelerate the construction of Guangzhou Jiaotong University and build a high-level and distinctive applied university. In October 2021, the People's Government of Guangdong Province issued the "14th Five-Year Plan for Education Development in Guangdong Province", requiring the acceleration of the construction of universities such as Guangzhou Jiaotong University with high starting points and high standards. In 2021, Guangzhou City determined to expropriate 413 acres of land around the Huangpu Campus of Guangzhou Maritime College for the construction of Guangzhou Jiaotong University, and the total land area of the school is 978 acres.
