Guangzhou Maritime College was founded in 1964. It is a public undergraduate college managed by the Guangzhou Municipal People's Government. It is the only independent maritime undergraduate college in South China. It is a "civilized campus" unit in Guangdong Province, a green school in Guangdong Province, a "strong characteristic" construction university in Guangdong Province's "Chongbuqiang" plan, a project construction unit for the master's degree awarding in Guangdong Province, and a provincial pilot unit for the construction of grassroots people's armed forces in Guangdong Province. In 1981, with the approval of the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China, the Guangzhou Maritime School and the Guangzhou Water Transport Industry School merged to form the Guangzhou Maritime School directly under the Ministry of Transport. In 1992, with the approval of the State Education Commission, the Guangzhou Maritime School and the Guangzhou Maritime Branch of Wuhan Water Transport Engineering College merged to form the Guangzhou Maritime College directly under the Ministry of Transport.
