The construction of a free trade port with Chinese characteristics in Hainan is a major strategic decision personally planned, deployed and promoted by General Secretary Xi Jinping, focusing on the domestic and international situations and promoting the innovative development of socialism with Chinese characteristics. In April 2022, when the General Secretary visited Hainan, he demanded to accelerate the construction of a free trade port with Chinese characteristics with global influence, make Hainan a model of China's reform and opening up in the new era, and make Hainan Free Trade Port a beautiful business card showing Chinese style, giving Hainan a new and more important mission. The construction of Hainan Free Trade Port requires the support of high-level universities and the guarantee of high-level medical and public health systems. As the only public medical school in Hainan Free Trade Port, Hainan Medical College not only undertakes the important mission of strengthening the port with higher education, but also carries the important basic support for building a "higher level of health island". To better serve the construction of the free trade port, serve the national strategies such as maritime power and South China Sea security, give full play to Hainan's geographical, resource and policy advantages, help build "Healthy Hainan" and "Healthy China", accelerate the development of tropical medicine, serve the "Belt and Road" and especially the construction of a community of human health destiny in Southeast Asia, Hainan Medical College has a heavy responsibility on its shoulders and has no choice but to do its duty. Hainan Medical College is located in Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, a tropical coastal city known as the "Coconut City". Its predecessor began with the Haiqiang Medical Technology School founded in 1947 and the private Hainan University Medical College founded in 1948. There are three campuses, Chengxi (main campus), Guilinyang (new campus) and Longhua, covering an area of 1,416.71 acres. The school adheres to the school motto with "virtue, rigor, erudition and harmony" as the core content, and constantly promotes the spirit of "self-improvement, unity and progress, and hard work". It has built a six-in-one medical education system of "teaching-clinical-scientific research-international cooperation-social service-cultural inheritance", and has trained more than 70,000 graduates for the country. It is the first batch of pilot universities for the National Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program, the first batch of undergraduate colleges for the comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education, the construction unit of Hainan Province's characteristic high-level universities, and the leading unit of the National Emergency Medical Rescue Team (Hainan), which has fully opened a new era for Hainan Province to independently train high-level medical talents. Adhering to the concept of "taking undergraduate studies as the basis and attaching equal importance to undergraduate studies", the school adheres to the strategy of high-quality development. The school has formed a comprehensive and multi-level talent training system that recruits students from all over the country, covering full-time undergraduates, master's and doctoral students, international students, as well as adult education and continuing education. There are currently 15,340 full-time students. Among them, there are 12,207 undergraduates (including 633 international students) and 1,760 doctoral and master's students. Students at the school have won the first prize for innovation and entrepreneurship of college students in pharmacy and Chinese medicine in national medical schools, and the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the National College Student Computer Design Competition, the National Life Science Competition, and the International Physiology Knowledge Competition China Regional Competition and many other national awards. The school currently has 11,834 faculty and medical staff, including 1,100 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 749 people in the school headquarters, 479 people with senior professional and technical titles, 163 professors, and doctoral degrees account for nearly 51.27%. The university has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 national outstanding young scientists, 1 Yangtze River Scholar, 7 national candidates of the National "Million Talents Project", 4 national outstanding teachers, 1 national famous teacher of Chinese medicine colleges and universities, 5 people selected for the "New Century Excellent Talents Support Program" of the Ministry of Education, and 15 Hainan Province Double Hundred Talent Teams. Adhering to the concept of "medical and educational collaboration and interdisciplinary studies", the university adheres to the strategy of strengthening the university through education. The university offers 36 undergraduate majors, covering 4 disciplines including medicine, science, management, and engineering. It has 5 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 2 national characteristic majors, 3 national first-class undergraduate courses, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national clinical teaching training demonstration center, and 1 national clinical (TCM clinical) teaching training demonstration center. The university has three of the largest tertiary-level A-level comprehensive directly affiliated hospitals in the province, including the Affiliated Hainan Hospital (Hainan Provincial People's Hospital), the First Affiliated Hospital, and the Second Affiliated Hospital, with a total of 7,020 open beds, 5.8809 million outpatient visits per year, and 257,300 discharges, accounting for 12.64% and 21.13% of the province respectively, making significant contributions to Hainan Province's "no serious illness leaving the island" and clinical teaching. In addition, the university also has 10 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 12 teaching hospitals, and 2 cooperatively built disease control centers, providing strong support for clinical teaching. It has 15 national key clinical specialties and 7 provincial key disciplines. Clinical medicine ranks in the top 5‰ of ESI disciplines, and pharmacology and toxicology ranks in the top 1% of ESI disciplines. There are currently first-level doctoral degree authorization points in clinical medicine, five first-level master's degree authorization points in basic medicine, clinical medicine, pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, biology, and five professional master's degree authorization points in clinical medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy, and stomatology. Adhering to the concept of "focusing on characteristics and serving the local area", the school adheres to the strategy of strengthening the school through science and technology. The school has established three key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, including tropical translational medicine, emergency and trauma research, reproductive health and related disease research and transformation, and one key laboratory for tropical disease prevention and control of the National Health Commission. In the past five years, 490 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects have been approved, of which 276 were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation. Nearly 10,000 papers have been published in domestic and foreign academic journals as the first author or corresponding author, of which 2,891 were included in SCI and 2,279 were in Chinese core journals. Four papers were published in the three top journals of "Cell", "Nature" and "Science". Won 40 awards at the provincial and ministerial levels and above, including 6 first prizes of Hainan Natural Science Award and Science and Technology Progress Award, and 1 first prize of "Invention Entrepreneurship Award Innovation Award" of China Invention Association. It hosts 6 academic journals, among which Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine and Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine are the only two international tropical medicine journals in China that are all-English and included in SCI, ranking 7th and 18th in the global SCI tropical medicine journals. Adhering to the concept of "embracing all rivers and pursuing excellence", the school adheres to the strategy of open education. The school has established cooperative relations with well-known domestic and foreign universities such as the University of Nebraska, the University of Basel, Switzerland, Mahidol University, Thailand, the University of Hong Kong, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, and Nanjing Medical University. It has jointly established the "International Research Center for Aging and Tumors" with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation of the United States and the Ruijin Hospital affiliated to the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and co-organized the Hainan Medical College West of England College, a Sino-foreign cooperative institution, with the University of the West of England in the United Kingdom. It has initiated the establishment of the "Belt and Road" Tropical Medicine Alliance composed of 122 colleges and universities and scientific research institutions in 30 countries and regions, and has successfully held 5 International Tropical Medicine Summit Forums. Adhering to the concept of "unity and struggle, overcoming difficulties", it adheres to the strategy of reform and innovation. In particular, on September 15, 2023, the Hainan Provincial Party Committee and the Hainan Provincial Government appointed Chen Guoqiang, a famous medical educator, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former dean of the School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and vice president of Shanghai Jiaotong University, as the dean of Hainan Medical College, and issued the Hainan Provincial People's Government's "Several Measures on Supporting Hainan Medical College to Deepen Reform and High-quality Development", increasing policy and financial investment, and relying on the school to operate the Hainan Academy of Medical Sciences.
