Hainan University is a comprehensive key university formed in August 2007 by merging the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture and the former Hainan University. It is a "Ministry-Provincial Joint Construction" university of the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial People's Government, and a national "Double First-Class" construction university. The school adheres to the school motto of "embracing all rivers and pursuing great aspirations", and promotes the school spirit of "self-reliance, dedication, virtue and perseverance". In 2008, it entered the ranks of key construction universities of the national "211 Project"; in 2012, it entered the ranks of the national "Central and Western Higher Education Revitalization Plan" construction, and successively received construction support such as "Central and Western Colleges and Universities Basic Capacity Construction Project" and "Central and Western Colleges and Universities Comprehensive Strength Improvement Project"; in 2017, it was selected as a national "World-Class Discipline" construction university; in 2018, the Hainan Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Government made a major decision to "gather the whole province's strength to run Hainan University well"; in the same year, the school became a "Ministry-Provincial Joint Construction" university of the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial People's Government, and was included in the sequence of universities directly under the Ministry of Education. On April 13, 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out in his important speech at the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Hainan's establishment as a province and the establishment of a special economic zone that "we must support Hainan University in creating world-class disciplines", which pointed out the direction for the construction and development of Hainan University in the new era and provided a fundamental guideline. The former South China University of Tropical Agriculture was founded in 1958 and was closely integrated with the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, which was founded in 1954. Together, they were called the "Two Academies of Tropical Agriculture" and were known as the "twin stars" in the field of tropical agricultural science and education in my country. Inspired by Premier Zhou Enlai's brilliant inscription "Establishing a career in Danzhou and taking root in Treasure Island", the "two academies" have made my country the only country in the world to successfully plant natural rubber on a large scale within the range of 18-24° north latitude after arduous struggles, making my country miraculously rise from a country that originally had no rubber planting to the world's fifth largest rubber producing country. The university has thus established a unique position in the field of rubber and tropical agriculture research, and has won more than 900 scientific and educational achievements, including the first prize of the National Invention Award, the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, making significant contributions to the national and local economic and social development. The former Hainan University started hard on a piece of wasteland in 1983, and built a discipline and professional system with the largest scale in the province and extensive social influence and influence, becoming a provincial comprehensive key university. In 1993, Comrade Jiang Zemin inspected the university and wrote the inscription "Build a socialist special zone university and cultivate qualified talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence and physique". In 2005, the university was rated as excellent in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education and was approved to establish a national college student cultural quality education base, making positive contributions to the economic and social development of Hainan. Since its establishment, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Dong Biwu, Ye Jianying, Deng Xiaoping, Hu Yaobang, Wang Zhen and other older generation revolutionaries, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Lanqing, Wei Jianxing, Zeng Qinghong, Liu Yandong, Sun Chunlan and other party and state leaders have visited the school and given cordial care. The disciplines cover philosophy, economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, management, and art. Crop science has been selected into the world's first-class discipline construction list for two consecutive rounds, and 8 disciplines including plant and animal science, materials science, chemistry, agricultural science, engineering, environmental science/ecology, biology and biochemistry, and general social sciences have entered the top 1% of ESI globally. There are more than 2,800 full-time teachers, 62 national talents such as academicians and outstanding young scientists, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the Canadian National Academy of Engineering and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of the Japanese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering, 3 academicians of the European Academy of Sciences, and 2 national teaching masters. The school implements the strategy of strengthening the school through science and technology. It has co-built the National Key Laboratory of Tropical Crop Biobreeding and the National Key Laboratory of Digital Medical Engineering, and has the National Key Laboratory of South China Sea Marine Resources Utilization, the National Salt-Alkali Tolerant Rice Technology Innovation Center, 3 Provincial-Ministry Co-built Collaborative Innovation Centers, 23 Provincial-Ministry Key Laboratories, 32 Provincial-Ministry Engineering Research Centers, 5 Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Bases, 15 Academician Workstations, 29 Academician Team Innovation Centers, 2 National and Regional Research Centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 Research Base of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 2 Provincial Key New Think Tanks of Philosophy and Social Sciences, 11 Provincial Key Research Bases of Philosophy and Social Sciences, and established the "Hainan Dongpo Culture Research and Communication Center" to help build the cultural connotation of Hainan Free Trade Port. Among them: Hainan University's "Belt and Road" Research Institute was selected into the 2022 "China Think Tank Index (CTTI) Top 100 University Think Tanks List" and was rated as an A-level think tank. Adhering to the national strategy and the needs of Hainan's economic and social development, in accordance with the idea of "solving real problems and truly solving problems", we focus on the seven key research areas of "free trade port development and institutional innovation", "ecological civilization", "cultural tourism", "Southern breeding and tropical high-efficiency agriculture", "marine technology", "full health" and "information technology" to establish a collaborative innovation center, support and lead the school's related fields or disciplines to become "urgently needed in Hainan and first-class in the country", and provide strong support for achieving high-level scientific and technological self-reliance. The school deepens education and teaching reforms. "Research and Practice of the "One Main and Three Auxiliary" Practical Teaching Model of Ideological and Political Theory Courses" and "Dual Cross-integration, prosperous work and light learning: Innovation and Practice of Hainan Free Trade Port's New Tourism Talent Training System" won the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement in 2018 and 2022. In 2023, our teachers won the first prize in the finals of the Sixth National College Young Teachers Teaching Competition, achieving a historic breakthrough in Hainan Province in this event. The quality of students' training and competitiveness are constantly improving. In 2021 and 2022, the student team won the gold medal of the China International "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the champion of the "Lee and Li Cup" National College Moot Court Competition, and the first prize of the Sixth National College Student Art Exhibition for two consecutive years. In 2022, it won the SIAM Award of the American International College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition (MCM) and the Interdisciplinary Modeling Competition (ICM) for the first time.
