The school was formerly known as Yishan Normal School of Guangxi Province, which was founded in 1951. It has gone through the stages of Guangxi Yishan District Normal School, Liuzhou Normal School, and Yishan Normal School in Hechi District of Guangxi Province. In December 1978, the State Council approved the establishment of Hechi on the basis of Yishan Normal School. Normal College, Yishan Normal School (later renamed Yizhou Normal School for Nationalities) was reestablished in May 1979 with the approval of the Hechi Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1994, it was renamed "Hechi Normal College" with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of the Autonomous Region, Hechi College was established based on the merger of Hechi Normal College and Yizhou Normal School for Nationalities. In December 2011, the school passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In 2013, the school was approved as a new master's degree-granting unit project construction unit in Guangxi. In January 2016, the school was approved to become a pilot university for overall transformation and development at the autonomous region level. In December 2019, the school successfully passed the undergraduate teaching review and evaluation. After more than 70 years of school development, the school has become a multi-disciplinary local undergraduate college with a certain scale and initial characteristics. The school currently has 857 faculty members, including 671 full-time teachers and 228 with senior professional titles, including senior and deputy senior professional titles. The school attaches equal importance to arts and sciences, and plans a development layout of disciplines and majors of "promoting work, enriching literature, strengthening teachers, and developing new ideas". It has 13 secondary colleges and 3 teaching assistant units, 50 undergraduate majors, and 3 junior college (higher vocational) majors, covering economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. 9 major academic disciplines. Among them, Chinese language and literature is a national-level characteristic major construction site, and 9 majors such as electronic information engineering, biological science, and primary school education are the first-class undergraduate major construction sites in the autonomous region. Ethnology and biochemical engineering are key disciplines in Guangxi, and Chinese language and literature are among the key disciplines in Guangxi. It is a key discipline with advantages and characteristics in Guangxi universities. The Northwest Guangxi Minority Intangible Cultural Resources Research Center, the Talent Creation Training Base, and the Guangxi Ethnic Minority Development Research Base are key research bases for humanities and social sciences in universities in Guangxi. The school also has various key laboratories at all levels, scientific and technological innovation platforms, autonomous region-level teaching teams, and many other professional platforms for advantageous disciplines. The school has been awarded the Guangxi Professional Master's Degree Award Project Construction Unit, and comprehensively focuses on promoting the application for master's degree programs in three disciplines, including Master of Education, Electronic Information, and Biology and Medicine, and strives to be qualified to apply for a master's degree granting unit in 2026.
