Henan University is a national "double first-class" university with a long history of running schools, a complete range of disciplines, distinctive professional characteristics, and profound cultural heritage. Henan University was founded in 1912 and was originally named Henan Preparatory School for Studying in Europe and America. The first president was Mr. Lin Boxiang, and the campus was built on the site of the Henan Gongyuan. Later, it went through the stages of Zhongzhou University, National Kaifeng Sun Yat-sen University (also known as the National Fifth Sun Yat-sen University), and Provincial Henan University. In 1942, it was upgraded to National Henan University. In 1952, the colleges and departments were adjusted, and some colleges and departments were either established independently or merged into brother universities. The school headquarters was renamed Henan Normal College. After going through the stages of Kaifeng Normal College and Henan Normal University, the name of Henan University was restored in 1984. In October 2008, the school entered the ranks of provincial and ministerial co-construction universities. In September 2017, the school was selected as the first batch of national "double first-class" construction universities. In February 2022, the school was again selected as a national "double first-class" construction university. Over the past 111 years, the university has adhered to the motto of "Enlightening the people with virtue and striving for perfection", formed the school spirit of "unity, diligence, rigor and simplicity" and the university spirit with "perseverance and self-improvement" as the core, cultivated more than 700,000 talents of various types, and made outstanding contributions to the revitalization of education, scientific and technological innovation, cultural inheritance, social progress and human civilization. Henan University is a comprehensive, research-oriented university with 13 disciplines including literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, education, art and cross-disciplinary. It has 40 colleges (teaching and research departments), 92 undergraduate majors, 45 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 35 types of master's professional degree authorization categories, 21 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 20 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 11 disciplines ranked in the top 1% of the ESI world rankings, and 82 undergraduate majors have entered the "Double 10,000 Plan" for the construction of first-class undergraduate majors. The university has the Zhengzhou Longzihu Campus, the Kaifeng Minglun Campus (the modern architectural complex is a national key cultural relic protection unit), and the Jinming Campus, covering a total area of more than 5,500 acres. The university has more than 50,000 full-time students and more than 4,700 faculty and staff. Among the teachers, there are 6 academicians and academicians, 26 national leading talents such as Yangtze River Scholars, National Outstanding Youths, and "Ten Thousand Talents Plan" leading talents, and 15 national young talents; it has 3 national key laboratories, 1 national field scientific observation and research station, 2 national key social science research platforms, 3 national and local joint engineering research centers (engineering laboratories), 4 Henan Provincial Laboratories (Institutes), 5 key laboratories (centers) of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture, and a number of national education, research, and training bases; it has the Henan University Press and 16 academic journals, and the total amount of literature and information resources in the collection is nearly 13 million volumes; it has established friendly cooperative relations with 196 universities in 39 countries and regions. In recent years, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Jiang Zemin, Jia Qinglin, Li Lanqing, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and other party and state leaders have visited the university and placed high hopes on the development of Henan University. The Henan Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government fully support Henan University in improving its quality and ranking in the construction of "Double First-Class" and building Henan's higher education "double aircraft carriers".
