The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts was established in 1984 under the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts Ordinance and is Asia's premier performing arts institution of higher learning. The School of Performing Arts offers bachelor's programs and practice-based master's programs. Areas of study include opera, dance, drama, film and television, music and stage, and production arts. The Academy's educational policy focuses on reflecting Hong Kong's multiculturalism, integrating Chinese and Western cultures, and promoting interdisciplinary learning. Since 2008, the Academy for Performing Arts has been awarded the "Subject Area Accreditation" qualification by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ), which enables the Academy to self-monitor and accredit its five subject areas (Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music and stage and production arts). Starting from 2016, the "Discipline Scope Assessment" qualification approved by the Academy for Performing Arts has been extended to cover degrees and tertiary programs at master's degree and below. The courses offered by the Academy of Chinese Opera have also passed the accreditation and are recognized under the Qualifications Framework. In addition to the Wan Chai headquarters, the Bethany Heritage Campus in Pok Fu Lam has also been the location of the Academy of Film and Television’s training facilities since 2006. According to the QS World University Rankings released in 2022, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts ranks first in Asia and tenth in the world in the performing arts category.
