Huaqiao University is a university directly under the Central United Front Work Department (Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council). The school is a national Chinese language education base, a national college student cultural quality education base, a national language and writing promotion base, a national language service field characteristic service export base, a national demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, a national demonstration school for the reform of college teacher assessment and evaluation, and a national college Chinese excellent traditional culture inheritance base. In 1960, the school was founded in Quanzhou, Fujian with the approval of the state, and the first president was Liao Chengzhi. It was closed in 1970 and resumed in 1978. In 1983, it was identified as a "national key university" by the Party Central Committee. In 1996, it was jointly built by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the People's Government of Fujian Province. The Xiamen campus was put into use in 2006. In 2018, it was selected as a "double first-class" construction university in Fujian Province. In 2019, it was jointly built by the Central United Front Work Department, the Ministry of Education, and the People's Government of Fujian Province. The school established a board of directors in 1980, and Zhuang Xiquan, Hu Ping, Huang Changxi, Jia Qinglin, Chen Mingyi, Song Defu, and Wang Gang successively served as chairman. The current chairman is Cai Dafeng, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and the honorary chairman is Ho Hau Wah, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The school has campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen, with 28 colleges, 11 disciplines, 10 first-level doctoral programs, 26 first-level master's programs, 25 professional master's programs, and 5 postdoctoral mobile stations; 41 national and provincial key disciplines, 3 first-class disciplines in Fujian Province; 4 disciplines of engineering, chemistry, materials science and computer science are in the top 5‰ of the ESI world ranking, and 2 disciplines of environment/ecology and social sciences are in the top 1%. There are 68 undergraduate majors, including 35 national first-class undergraduate majors, 17 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, and 22 majors have passed international and domestic professional certification. There are 27,880 full-time undergraduate students, 7,706 graduate students, and 8,388 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and foreign countries. There are 2,964 faculty and staff. Among the 1,748 full-time teachers, 57% hold senior professional and technical positions, 69% hold doctoral degrees, and 64% are young and middle-aged teachers under the age of 45. There are more than 100 high-level talents such as academicians and national leading talents, as well as many high-level teams such as the "Huang Danian-style Teacher Team of National Colleges and Universities" of the Ministry of Education and the innovation team in key areas of the "Innovation Talent Promotion Plan" of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The school currently has more than 100 teaching and research platforms at the provincial and ministerial levels, including the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center, the National "111 Plan" Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Base, the Provincial and Ministerial Co-construction Collaborative Innovation Center, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, the Virtual Teaching and Research Office, the Virtual Simulation Experiment Center, and the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. It is the first research base of the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in Fujian Province. It has established school-local cooperation relations with 8 cities in Fujian Province and Chongqing City, and has provided targeted assistance to the Qianxinan Experimental Zone in Guizhou and Jishishan County in Gansu.
