Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It was established on May 26, 2000 by the merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, and Wuhan Institute of Urban Construction. It is one of the key construction universities of the national "211 Project" and the "985 Project", and is one of the first batch of "Double First-Class" construction universities. The school campus covers an area of more than 7,000 acres. The park is lush with trees, green grass, elegant environment, beautiful scenery, and a green coverage rate of 72%. It is known as the "forest-style university". The school has a complete teaching and scientific research support system and a complete range of public service facilities. The school has a complete range of disciplines and a reasonable structure, and has basically built a discipline system of a comprehensive, research-oriented university. It has 11 major disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary disciplines; it has 117 undergraduate majors, 48 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 46 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, and 42 postdoctoral research mobile stations. There are 7 national key disciplines in the first-level disciplines, 15 national key disciplines in the second-level disciplines (internal medicine and surgery are counted as the third level), and 7 national key (cultivation) disciplines. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 44 disciplines of the school participated in the evaluation and all were on the list, including 4 disciplines such as mechanical engineering, optical engineering, biomedical engineering, and public health and preventive medicine, which entered A+, 14 A-level disciplines, and 33 B+ and above disciplines. 9 disciplines were selected in the second round of the national "Double First-Class" construction discipline list. The school implements the "talent-driven school" strategy and has a strong faculty. There are more than 3,700 full-time teachers, including more than 1,500 professors and more than 1,400 associate professors; there are 20 academicians among the teachers, 302 chief scientists of the "973 Program" projects, chief scientists of major scientific research programs, and chief scientists of national key R&D programs, 13 national teaching masters, and 43 selected candidates for the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project. There are 11 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Groups and 19 Ministry of Education Innovation Teams. The school implements the educational thought of building a "university of students, scholars and academics", adheres to the school-running philosophy of "education-oriented, innovation as the soul, responsibility as action", adheres to the construction goal of "first-class teaching and first-class undergraduate", takes various measures to deepen the reform of education and teaching, comprehensively promote quality education, and build and improve a vibrant innovative talent training system. Over the past few decades, more than 700,000 graduates have entered the society and are spread across all walks of life around the world. In accordance with the scientific and technological development strategy of "application leadership, basic breakthroughs, and coordinated development", a scientific and technological innovation system covering three levels of basic research, high-tech research, and technology development has been built. The university has built a number of major national scientific research bases represented by the "four pearls" such as Wuhan Optoelectronics National Research Center, National Pulsed High Magnetic Field Science Center, National Major Scientific and Technological Infrastructure for Precision Gravity Measurement, and National Digital Design and Manufacturing Innovation Center. It has 7 national key laboratories, 2 national technology innovation centers, 1 national industry-education integration innovation platform, 7 national engineering (technology) research centers, 1 national clinical medicine research center, 1 national medical center, 1 integrated research platform, 1 "Belt and Road" joint laboratory, 6 national international scientific and technological cooperation bases of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and a number of provincial and ministerial scientific research bases. The school adheres to the school-running idea of "serving as the purpose and developing in contribution", combines learning, research and production, establishes close cooperative relations with local governments and leading enterprises in the industry, and carries out scientific and technological cooperation through the establishment of off-site research institutes and the co-construction of joint research centers, vigorously promotes the transformation and implementation of scientific and technological achievements, and serves the regional economic construction. The school adheres to the concept of open school-running, actively carries out all-round and multi-level international exchanges and cooperation, and has currently carried out friendly cooperation with more than 300 universities and institutions in 41 countries and regions in the world. The School of Engineering Science is one of the first four international demonstration colleges in China, and the China-EU School of Clean and Renewable Energy is listed as one of the 40 typical cases of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU. The affiliated Union Hospital and Tongji Hospital are large modern comprehensive hospitals integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and training. They are the medical diagnosis and treatment centers in Hubei Province and even in the central and southern regions. The affiliated Liyuan Hospital highlights the characteristics of geriatrics and is the Hubei Provincial Geriatric Disease Prevention and Treatment Research Center.
