Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, the only higher art institution in central my country, has a history of 100 years since its founding. The predecessor of the school was Wuchang Art School, which was founded in 1920 by Jiang Lanpu, Tang Yijing, Xu Ziheng and others. In 1923, a special undergraduate department was added and the school was renamed Wuchang Art School. In 1930, a music subject was added and the school was renamed Private Wuchang Art College (abbreviated as "Wuchang Art College"). After the school was destroyed by Japanese bombing in 1938, it moved westward and moved to Gulaibei, Yidu, Shengquan Temple, Jiangjin, Sichuan. It was located at the 53rd Ladder of Deganba, Jiangjin, Sichuan to continue its operation. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, the school returned to Wuhan after demobilization. In 1949, Wuchang Art College was taken over by Zhongyuan University. After many changes, it continued until the Fine Arts Department of Hubei Institute of Arts in 1958. In 1985, with the approval of the People's Government of Hubei Province and the approval of the State Education Commission, Hubei Institute of Fine Arts was independently established. Mr. Cai Yuanpei once wrote the inscription "Promote Aesthetic Education" for the school. During the school's operation, a large number of well-known artists and educators have taught at the school. As one of the earliest specialized art colleges in modern China, our school is an important birthplace of modern and contemporary higher art education in China. Over the past century, it has forged the academic spirit of "inclusiveness" and the teaching concept of "compatibility and interaction", and cultivated generations of outstanding talents who "respect morality, study hard, act quickly, and pursue beauty" to serve the society, making unique contributions to the development of China's art cause. The school has two campuses, Canglong Island and Tanhualin, covering an area of more than 440,000 square meters, of which the Tanhualin campus is nearly 60,000 square meters and the Canglong Island campus is more than 380,000 square meters. There are more than 700 faculty and staff members and more than 8,000 students at all academic levels. At present, the school has 9 people who enjoy the special allowance of the State Council, 8 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in the province, 16 people who enjoy special allowances from the provincial government, 1 person in the New Century Excellent Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education, 1 young top talent in Hubei Province, 3 candidates for the New Century High-level Talent Project of Hubei Province, 1 winner of the Youth Science Award and Chutian Gardener Award of the Ministry of Education and the Ho Ying-Tong Education Foundation, 3 "Hubei Industry Professors", 21 specially appointed professors, more than 270 visiting (part-time) professors and high-level special lecturers. The school has 15 undergraduate teaching units, 29 undergraduate majors, and 36 professional directions, covering 8 professional categories of fine arts, design, art theory, drama and film, education, business administration, machinery and architecture, forming a discipline and professional layout with art disciplines as the main disciplines, and engineering, management, and education disciplines supporting each other. Our school began to recruit graduate students in 1979. In 1981, it became one of the first national universities to grant master's degrees. In 2005, it became one of the first national universities to grant master's degrees in fine arts (MFA). Since 2010, the school has jointly trained doctoral students with Wuhan University of Technology. In 2021, it was approved to grant a master's degree in cultural relics and museums. The school currently has three first-level master's degree authorization points in art theory, fine arts, and design; and two master's professional degree authorization points in art and cultural relics and museums. In recent years, it has won one second prize in the provincial graduate teaching achievement award, has three provincial graduate education innovation projects, and four provincial graduate workstations. In 2018, our school was listed as a "Double First-Class" construction university (domestic first-class discipline construction university) by the provincial government, and fine arts was listed as a domestic first-class discipline construction discipline. The university's undergraduate teaching now has 3 characteristic majors of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education, 12 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 3 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites; 6 national first-class undergraduate courses, 2 national quality courses, 2 national quality resource sharing courses, 31 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 16 provincial excellent grassroots teaching organizations, and 9 provincial teaching teams; 1 national talent training model innovation experimental zone, 1 "professional reform pilot project" of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education, and 1 project of support cooperation plan between central ministries and local universities; 1 national off-campus practical education base project for college students, 1 national planning textbook for undergraduate general higher education in the "12th Five-Year Plan", and 13 industry-university cooperation and collaborative education projects of the Ministry of Education. The university has won 1 silver medal, 3 bronze medals, and 1 selected award in the previous China International "Internet +" College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and has been approved to establish the "Wuhan College Students Entrepreneurship College". The "Fifty-three Ladders of the School" cartoon review team won the title of "Top Ten Grassroots Online Review Bases in Hubei Province in 2021", and the "Drawing Marx" project was selected as the "Original Cultural Products of Colleges and Universities" by the Ministry of Education in 2023. The school's undergraduate teaching implements the "1+3" visual arts undergraduate talent training model reform of 1 year of general art basic education and 3 years of education in different majors (directions), and has been approved by the Ministry of Education for the construction of an innovative experimental zone for talent training models. The "Aesthetic Top-notch Innovative Talent Cultivation and Promotion Plan" was established to implement the training model of "Visual Arts Basic General Education Platform + Interdisciplinary (Professional) Education Platform + Discipline Category Education Platform + Professional Direction Education Platform". The school currently has 1 provincial collaborative innovation center, 3 provincial humanities and social sciences research bases, 1 provincial intangible cultural heritage research center, 1 provincial engineering research center, and 12 provincial science and technology innovation teams; in the past five years, the school has been approved for nearly 500 vertical scientific research projects of various types, including nearly 40 national projects; various creations and designs have won awards totaling more than 1,000. In the three "China Art Awards" that have been held, the works of our teachers have won the highest awards, including 2 gold medals for the Creation Award (National Art Exhibition) and 1 theoretical review award. 179 people have received special funding for the Hubei Province Art Talent Training Project; more than 120 works have been funded by the provincial key art creation project support project. The school has signed cooperation agreements with more than ten countries in Europe, North America and Asia, as well as 27 colleges and universities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and carried out activities such as teacher lectures, visiting studies for young and middle-aged teachers, artist residency, exchange studies, short-term study tours, workshop teaching, and international exhibitions. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, since 2013, the school has cooperated with Hanseo University in South Korea to organize undergraduate education programs in animation. The school organizes and hosts more than 30 large-scale international and domestic conferences and professional exhibitions, exhibitions of works by famous artists, and exhibitions of works by teachers and students every year. In recent years, nine collection exhibitions, including “Famous Teachers’ Paintings – Exhibition of Works by “Three Elders of Hubei””, “Academy’s Vision – 2012 Hubei Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum Collection Exhibition”, “Driving Clouds and Mists to the Pen – Special Exhibition on the 160th Anniversary of the Birth of He Liangpu, a Pioneer of Modern Art Education”, and “Looking at the Chutian – Research Exhibition of Hubei Socialist Economic Construction Special Art Works”, have been selected into the National Art Museum Collection Exhibition Season Activity Project of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Four international and domestic exhibitions, including “The Great River · Guanlan – The Second Tanhualin International Printmaking Invitational Exhibition”, “East + West International Design Week and the 10th Anniversary Special Exhibition of East + West”, “Visions of Mind Maps – Markus Lüpertz in China”, “Looking Up and Down at the World – Zhou Shaohua” Double Solo Exhibition, and “Thousand-Year Brocade Colorful Latitude and Longitude – Tujia Brocade Art Exhibition”, have been successively awarded as Excellent Exhibition Projects or Nominations of National Art Museums. The public education project “Searching for the Memory of Wuhan to Protect the City’s Cultural Heritage” won the Excellent Public Education Project of National Art Museums. “Women’s Handicraft – From Traditional Folk Fabric Art to Contemporary Soft Sculpture Art Research Exhibition” was selected into the National Art Museum Young Curator Support Program (Preliminary Review). In addition, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the school, the school held the "Century Aesthetic Education - Art Documents and Works Exhibition of the 100th Anniversary of Hubei Institute of Fine Arts" at the National Art Museum of China in 2020, and held the "Beauty in Hubei - Exhibition of Hubei Artists' Works in the National Art Museum of China" at the Art Museum of the Tanhualin Art District of Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. Both exhibitions have received widespread attention from the society. The school actively serves the local economic and social development and provides intellectual support and talent support for promoting the development of Hubei and Wuhan. It actively strengthens cooperation with local governments at all levels and has carried out a series of fruitful practices in expanding cooperation areas, enriching cooperation projects, deepening cooperation connotations, and promoting the transformation of scientific research results. The school has successively undertaken a large number of art design projects such as the Art Project of the Chinese Embassy in Chad, the main stadium of the Wuhan Sports Center for the 7th World Military Games, the public art projects of rail transit in Wuhan, Hubei, Nanchang, Jiangxi, and Wenzhou, Zhejiang, the Wuhan Garden Expo, and the art wall of Beijing Daxing Airport, and won many major awards in related fields. The school has been awarded the title of Wuhan Metro Construction Meritorious Unit and Advanced Unit for six consecutive years, and the Cultural Development Company was awarded the May 1st Labor Award. Tanhualin Art District has been awarded the title of "Hubei Cultural Industry Demonstration Base". It is a training base for the "China Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Group Training and Study Program" of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. It offers a number of art teacher professional training programs and comprehensive advanced training courses in Hubei and Henan provinces throughout the year. In 2019, it hosted the "African Youth Designer Training Program" project training. As the vice chairman unit of the China Wuhan Engineering Design Alliance and the Wuhan Design Capital Promotion Center, the school actively participates in the construction of culture and art in Wuhan, and contributes intellectual and artistic support to Wuhan's successful application and construction of the design capital. Since 2015, the school has been awarded the title of "Hubei Civilized Unit (Campus)"Honorary title. The school actively serves the "Belt and Road" initiative, connects with the development strategy of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the rise of the central region and the future vision of Wuhan UNESCO Design City, forges ahead, strides forward, inherits in culture and art, and develops in education and innovation. Guided by the academic spirit of "inclusiveness" and the teaching concept of "compatibility and interaction", the school benchmarks the requirements for the construction of "first-class universities and first-class disciplines" in higher art education, comprehensively deepens the reform of higher art education, accelerates and expands the opening up of education in the new era, and strives to promote the reform of the diversified visual talent training model system, and strives to build a "domestic first-class higher art college with distinctive characteristics and international influence"!
