Hubei University of Engineering is a full-time general undergraduate college organized by the People's Government of Hubei Province. The history of the school can be traced back to the Hubei Provincial Third Normal School founded in 1943. It has gone through the development stages of Xiaogan Normal School, Xiaogan University, Xiaogan Branch of Wuhan Normal College, Xiaogan Normal College, and Xiaogan Normal College. In 1986, it merged with Hubei Vocational and Technical Normal College (formerly the Xiaogan Branch of Huazhong Agricultural College). In 1999, the Ministry of Construction's Southern Urban and Rural Construction School (also known as Xiaogan City Construction Engineering School) was fully incorporated. In March 2000, it was renamed Xiaogan College, and in December 2011, it was renamed Hubei University of Engineering. The school is located in Xiaogan City, an important node city in the Wuhan Metropolitan Area and a famous city of Chinese filial piety culture. It is located at No. 272 Jiaotong Avenue, Xiaogan City, 50 kilometers away from Wuhan City. It takes 18 minutes to Wuhan Tianhe International Airport and 28 minutes to Hankou Railway Station by Xiaohan Metro. It has convenient transportation and obvious location advantages. The university currently has one campus, covering an area of 1,748 mu, with a building area of 727,000 square meters, fixed assets of 1.346 billion yuan, teaching and research equipment worth 222 million yuan, a total library area of 39,000 square meters, a collection of 1.8436 million paper documents, a total of 2.183 million electronic books, and nearly 40 Chinese and foreign language and various types of electronic databases and document resource sharing platforms. There are more than 25,000 students of all kinds (including 52 postgraduates in joint training). There are more than 1,300 faculty and staff, including 996 full-time teachers, 474 senior professional titles, 309 doctors, and 458 "double-teacher and double-capable" teachers. There are 29 high-level talents such as national outstanding teachers, recipients of various government subsidies, Chutian scholars, provincial outstanding young scholars, Hubei famous teachers, industrial professors, and Xianchuan scholars, 26 national and provincial honorary experts, and more than 100 famous experts and scholars are employed as part-time (visiting, honorary) professors. The school continues to improve its discipline and professional system, and comprehensively builds a discipline development pattern of "strengthening engineering, strengthening agricultural teachers, developing medicine, and diversified collaboration", realizing the cross-integration and coordinated development of 10 major disciplines including economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art, and forming a discipline system of leading disciplines, strong basic disciplines, collaborative disciplines, and emerging disciplines. It has established 5 provincial key disciplines including agricultural resources and environment, materials science and engineering, optical engineering, education, and botany. The Hubei Chutian Scholars Program has 12 disciplines. The "Biomass-based Functional Materials" and "Development and Efficient Utilization of Characteristic Agricultural Resources" advantage and characteristic discipline groups were approved as the "14th Five-Year Plan" Hubei Higher Education Institutions Advantage and Characteristic Disciplines (Groups). "Research on Chinese Filial Piety Culture" of "Journal of Hubei University of Engineering" is a famous column of the Ministry of Education. The university currently has 18 teaching colleges and 65 undergraduate majors, including 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 3 national college specialty majors, 2 majors of the "National Excellent Talent Training Program", 4 provincial undergraduate brand majors, 6 provincial comprehensive reform pilot majors, 6 provincial strategic emerging (pillar) industry talent training program majors, and 6 "Jingchu Excellent Talent" collaborative education majors. One major was selected as a national first-class major, 23 provincial first-class majors, 7 national first-class undergraduate courses and quality courses, and 57 provincial first-class undergraduate courses. It has won 4 first prizes for teaching achievements in higher education institutions in Hubei Province. It has built 4 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 provincial key experimental teaching demonstration center, and 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers (laboratories). Strengthen school-to-school cooperation and jointly build graduate internship practice bases with Hubei University and Hubei University of Technology. We have deepened the integration of production and education, school-enterprise cooperation, and carried out talent training and industry-university-research cooperation with a large number of large enterprises. We have built 297 internship and training and employment and entrepreneurship bases, 5 national and provincial off-campus practical teaching (internship and training) bases, and 2 Hubei Provincial Graduate Workstations. In the past five years, our school has won 361 provincial and above college student innovation and entrepreneurship training program projects, including 94 national projects; students have won 504 awards in national discipline (science and technology) competitions, including the highest national awards in major competitions such as national college student electronic design, mathematical modeling, information technology innovation and practice, advertising art, smart cars, data mining, and college English; the rate of students passing the postgraduate entrance examination is about 15%; the rate of students' graduation destination implementation remains above 92%. The school's scientific and technological innovation and social services have been promoted in a coordinated manner and have achieved fruitful results. There are 28 provincial scientific research platforms such as Hubei Key Laboratory, Hubei Provincial Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences, Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center, Hubei Engineering Research Center, Hubei Enterprise-School Joint Innovation Center, and Hubei Science and Technology Achievement Transformation Base. In the past five years, the university has won 21 National Natural Science Foundation and Social Science Foundation, 214 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, 49 provincial and municipal scientific research achievement awards, and more than 1,700 authorized patents and software copyrights. The school vigorously implements the action plan to serve the local area, carries out school-local cooperation and co-construction with local governments such as Xiaogan City, and actively promotes industrial transformation and upgrading. In the process of serving the local area, it has gradually built and formed the Chinese Filial Piety Culture Research Center, Hubei Small and Micro Enterprise Development Research Center, Hubei Biomass Source Functional Materials Engineering Technology Center, Hubei New Rural Development Research Institute, Modern Paper and Sanitary Products Manufacturing Key Technology Innovation Platform, Hubei Intellectual Property Training Base, Hubei Science and Technology Achievement Transformation Resource Branch, Hubei University Patent Transformation Base, Xiaogan Intellectual Property Operation Center, Xiaogan Economic Development Research Center, Xiaogan Social Development Research Center, Xiaogan Entrepreneurship University, Xiaogan Sunshine Social Work Service Center, Hanchuan Garment Industry Research Institute, "Beautiful Countryside" Planning and Construction Team and other characteristic service brands. The school strengthens international cooperation and exchanges, establishes inter-school exchange and cooperation relations with more than 10 universities in the United Kingdom, the United States and the "Belt and Road" countries, recruits international students from more than 10 countries, and jointly organizes undergraduate international cooperative education programs in financial engineering and civil engineering approved by the Ministry of Education with the University of Wolverhampton and Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom, respectively. They passed the project evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2019 and 2017. International exchange activities such as teacher training and study abroad and student study abroad are increasing. The school has been approved as a key construction university of the National "13th Five-Year Plan" Industry-Education Integration Development Project (Applied Undergraduate Colleges and Universities), a pilot college of the "Internet + Made in China 2025" Industry-Education Integration Promotion Plan, and the first batch of Hubei Province 2011 Plan Universities, and won the "National Civilized Unit", Hubei Province's "Best Civilized Unit", the first batch of "Hubei Province Ecological Garden School", and the first "Hubei Province Civilized Campus".
