Hunan First Normal University is known as "a thousand-year-old institution of higher learning and a century-old normal school". It is the birthplace of Hunan culture and one of the cradles of modern normal education in China. It is one of the sources of China's communist movement and the new democratic revolution, and it is also the germination of Mao Zedong Thought and one of the birthplaces of the sinicization of Marxism. The school was formerly the Changsha Chengnan Academy founded by Zhang Zai, a famous Neo-Confucianist in the Southern Song Dynasty in 1161 AD. It was established as the Hunan Normal School in 1903 and held modern normal education. In 1912, it was renamed Hunan Public First Normal School. In 1949, it was renamed Hunan Provincial First Normal School. In 2008, it was upgraded to an undergraduate school. In 2018, it was approved as a master's degree awarding institution in Hunan Province. In 2019, it was listed as the first batch of undergraduate colleges in Hunan Province. In 2021, the Ministry of Education established a special plan to support our school and Hunan Normal University to jointly train master's students. It is now a national key cultural relic protection unit, a national patriotism education demonstration base, a national red tourism classic scenic spot, a national primary and secondary school student research and practice education base, a national education system reform pilot unit, a national language and writing promotion base, the Ministry of Education's artificial intelligence to promote the construction of the teacher team pilot college, the Ministry of Education's excellent teacher training program reform undertaking unit. The school currently has three campuses: Chengnan Academy, Dongfanghong and Huanghua. There are more than 22,000 students on campus, 15 teaching and research colleges, 2 industrial colleges, and 2 affiliated primary schools. There are nearly 1,600 faculty and staff, including more than 500 senior professional and technical positions, nearly 600 doctors, and more than 60 candidates for the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to the country, candidates for the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents Support Program, experts enjoying special government allowances, and candidates for the Provincial New Century 121 Talent Project. There is one "National Huang Danian-style Teacher Team in Colleges and Universities" of the Ministry of Education. The school has a profound red cultural heritage and distinctive characteristics of teacher education. Mao Zedong, a great man of his generation, studied and worked here for eight years, and was involved in a series of revolutionary activities such as the founding of the Communist Party of China, realizing the transformation from a young student to a professional revolutionary, and from a radical democrat to a great Marxist. In addition, a group of national pillars such as He Shuheng, Cai Hesen, Li Weihan, Ren Bishi, and Zhang Guoji were trained, and more than 280 revolutionary martyrs such as Duan Dechang, Liu Chouxi, Yuan Guoping, and Guo Liang emerged. In history, a group of famous teachers such as Xu Teli, Yang Changji, Xie Juezai, Li Da, Yi Peiji, Zhou Gucheng, Tian Han, Li Jinxi, Yang Shuda, and Xin Shuzhi have gathered here, and Hunan talents such as Zeng Guofan, Zuo Zongtang, Hu Linyi, Guo Songtao, Zhang Baixi, Chen Tianhua, and Huang Xing have emerged. Since the founding of New China, the leaders of the Party and the state have been very concerned about the construction and development of the school. Mao Zedong praised "the First Normal School is a good school", wrote the name of the school "First Normal School" in his own handwriting, and inscribed "To be a teacher of the people, be a student of the people first" as the school motto. Xu Teli inscribed "Seek truth from facts, do not be self-righteous" as the school spirit. In recent years, party and state leaders Li Zhanshu, Zhao Leji and others have visited the school. The school has formed a discipline system with teacher education as its feature, electronic information and other related disciplines as its support, multidisciplinary cross-integration, and coordinated development of teaching, literature, science, engineering, economics, management, law, and art. It has 5 Hunan Province's applied characteristic disciplines, 4 provincial-level scientific and technological innovation teams have been approved, and 33 provincial-level platforms have been built. In the past five years, more than 1,200 scientific research projects at or above the provincial level have been approved, including nearly 100 national-level projects including key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and key projects of the National Social Science Foundation; 19 awards for achievements in natural sciences and social sciences at or above the provincial level have been won, and a series of representative think tank achievements have provided important intellectual support for serving the economic and social development of our province. The school currently has 38 undergraduate majors, 7 majors including primary education, mathematics and applied mathematics, ideological and political education, educational technology, Chinese language and literature, marketing, and musicology have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 10 majors have been selected as provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites. It has won 4 national teaching achievement awards and 42 provincial teaching achievement awards. The school insists on carrying out industry-university-research cooperation, and has outstanding regional service advantages. It has carried out industry-university-research cooperation with local governments such as Changsha City, Xiangjiang New District, Yiyang City, and Zhaoqing, Guangdong, and has carried out school-enterprise cooperation with Zoomlion, Sany Heavy Industry, Fenghua High-Tech and other enterprises. Since its establishment, it has trained more than 120,000 outstanding teachers and other types of talents, becoming the backbone of basic education and economic and social development in the province. The school insists on open education, and has established friendly cooperative relations with 22 universities in the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Austria, Russia, South Korea, Malaysia and other countries, and has carried out cooperative construction with domestic universities such as Beijing Normal University, Hunan University, Shaanxi Normal University, Hunan Normal University, Capital Normal University, and Xiangtan University.
