Hunan Medical College was founded in 1912. Its predecessor was the Changsha Red Cross Nursing Training Institute founded by the famous medical educator Mr. Yan Fuqing. In 1924, Changsha Renshu Nursing School was officially established. In 1961, it moved from Changsha to Anjiang to establish the Hunan Qianyang Health School. In 1981, it was renamed Huaihua Regional Health School. In 1984, it moved to Huaihua. In 2000, it was upgraded and renamed Huaihua Medical College. In 2014, it was upgraded and renamed Hunan Medical College. The school currently has two campuses, covering an area of 945,300 square meters, with a total building area of 264,200 square meters. There are about 19,100 teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment, with a total value of about 189 million yuan. In recent years, the school has been approved for 530 national, provincial and ministerial vertical scientific research projects with a funding of 25.629 million yuan, 220 horizontal scientific research projects with a funding of 93.1936 million yuan; won 11 scientific research achievement awards at all levels and types, published 79 books, authorized 433 national patents of various types, and published 587 high-level scientific research papers. The school library has a collection of 1.0977 million paper books and 1.0984 million electronic books. The school currently has 4,642 teaching and medical staff (including 2 directly affiliated hospitals), including 995 senior professional titles, 1,003 teachers with doctoral and master's degrees, 3 experts enjoying special government allowances, 2 doctoral supervisors, 98 master's supervisors, and 3,837 certified clinical teachers. The school recruits students from 27 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country, with 12,687 full-time college students, including 12,395 undergraduates. The school currently has three disciplines: medicine, education, and management. It offers 19 undergraduate majors, including clinical medicine, acupuncture and massage, medical imaging, stomatology, preventive medicine, nursing, pharmacy, medical laboratory technology, rehabilitation therapy, medical imaging technology, Chinese medicine, health inspection and quarantine, midwifery, food hygiene and nutrition, sports rehabilitation, health services and management, marketing, leisure sports, and supply chain management. Among them, the pharmacy major is a national first-class professional construction point, and the six majors of clinical medicine, nursing, medical laboratory technology, Chinese medicine, medical imaging technology, and health services and management are provincial first-class professional construction points. The school has 11 experimental teaching centers, 7 innovation training laboratories, 2 directly affiliated hospitals, 13 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 40 teaching hospitals, and 135 practical teaching bases, including 3 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 8 provincial college student innovation and entrepreneurship education centers, and 7 provincial school-enterprise cooperation demonstration bases.
