Hunan University of Science and Technology originated from Xiangbei Construction College established in 1949. It was formed in 2003 by merging Xiangtan Institute of Technology and Xiangtan Normal University. It is a university jointly established by the People's Government of Hunan Province and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, a university jointly established by the People's Government of Hunan Province and the former State Administration of Work Safety, a university supported by the "13th Five-Year Plan" National 100 Central and Western Universities Basic Capacity Construction Project, and a "Double First-Class" university in Hunan Province. The school covers an area of 3,003.88 acres, with a construction area of 1.1623 million square meters, a total value of 677.5 million yuan in teaching and scientific research equipment, and a total of more than 7.5 million paper and electronic documents. The university has 23 teaching colleges, including the School of Resources, Environment and Safety Engineering, the School of Civil Engineering, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (School of Future Technology, School of Marine Equipment and Engineering Technology), the School of Information and Electrical Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Engineering, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the School of Mathematics and Computational Science, the School of Physics and Electronic Science, the School of Life Science and Health, the School of Architecture and Art Design, the School of Humanities, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Marxism, the School of Education, the School of Business, the Qi Baishi Art College, the School of Physical Education (China Triathlon Academy), the School of Law and Public Administration (School of Discipline Inspection and Supervision), the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the School of Earth Sciences and Space Information, the Normal College, the Li Jinhui Conservatory of Music, and the Zhaotan Academy, as well as the School of Continuing Education, the School of International Education, and the Xiaoxiang College (an independent college). The disciplines and majors cover 12 disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, management, art, and interdisciplinary subjects. Four disciplines, namely engineering, chemistry, computer science and materials science, are in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. It has 7 first-level postdoctoral research stations, 8 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 48 master's degree authorization points (29 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 19 professional master's degree authorization categories), and has the recommendation qualification for excellent undergraduate graduates to study for a master's degree without examination and the qualification for recommendation for the "Master Teacher Program". It has 1 "world-class cultivation discipline" in Hunan Province, 5 key disciplines in the "14th Five-Year Plan" of Hunan Province, 1 superior and characteristic discipline group of Hunan Province's universities, and 3 national defense characteristic disciplines. It has 97 undergraduate majors, 24 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 8 national characteristic majors, 1 national professional comprehensive reform pilot major, 28 provincial first-class majors, and 17 provincial characteristic majors. The school currently has 2,731 faculty and staff, including 1,761 full-time teachers, 337 senior professional titles, and the proportion of doctoral degree teachers to full-time teachers is about 69%. There are 2 specially appointed academicians, 4 Yangtze River Scholars, 5 selected candidates for the Ten Thousand Talents Program, 2 national candidates for the Hundred Thousand Talents Project, 1 National Excellent Young Person, 1 Overseas High-level Young Talent, 1 National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent; more than 10 winners of honorary titles such as Model of the Times, National Teaching Master, National "Most Beautiful Teacher", National Model Teacher, and National Outstanding Teacher; 2 Huang Danian-style teacher teams in national universities. The school is an "excellent" university in the undergraduate teaching work level assessment of the Ministry of Education, a university in the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, the first batch of universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship in the country, the first batch of national innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base construction units, and a typical experience university for graduate employment in the country. The first batch of undergraduate admissions covers the whole country. There are 34,993 full-time undergraduate students, 6,317 graduate students, and 5,157 students from Xiaoxiang College (independent college). There is 1 national teaching team and 16 provincial teaching teams. It has 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 1 off-campus practical education base of the Ministry of Education's "Excellence Program", 93 provincial practical teaching platforms, 1 national new engineering research and practice project, 2 national new liberal arts research and practice projects, 8 national first-class courses, 112 provincial first-class courses, 74 provincial excellent courses, key courses and quality courses. Since the "12th Five-Year Plan", it has won 2 national teaching achievement awards and 84 provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards. The school has 41 national, provincial and ministerial science and technology innovation platforms for natural sciences, and 18 provincial social science research bases. Since the "12th Five-Year Plan", it has undertaken 877 national plan projects such as the "863 Program", the "973 Program", national key research and development projects, the National Natural Science Foundation projects, and the National Social Science Foundation projects. It has won 211 national and provincial and ministerial scientific research achievement awards, 3019 national authorized patents, software copyrights, etc., and transformed 198 scientific and technological achievements. "Journal of Hunan University of Science and Technology (Social Science Edition)" is a CSSCI source journal, a national Chinese core journal, a Chinese humanities and social sciences core journal, a RCCSE Chinese core academic journal, and an authoritative social science journal of national universities. "Journal of Hunan University of Science and Technology (Natural Science Edition)" was selected as a national Chinese core journal, a Chinese science and technology boutique journal, and an excellent science and technology journal of the Ministry of Education. "Contemporary Education Theory and Practice" was selected as an AMI comprehensive evaluation extended journal of Chinese humanities and social sciences journals, an RCCSE Chinese quasi-core academic journal (B+), and an excellent online journal of Chinese science and technology papers. The "Manatee II" submarine large-hole deep pressure-maintaining coring drilling system, which was led by the school, has set a new record for the world's deep-sea submarine drilling depth, breaking my country's long-term dependence on foreign countries for methane hydrate exploration technology and equipment, and has made a pioneering contribution to the research and development of my country's marine mineral exploration technology and equipment. The school has established good cooperative relations with nearly 40 universities in more than 10 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, Russia, Australia, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Austria, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Macau, and has recruited more than 20 countries and regions to study in China and exchange students from Taiwan.
