Jiangsu Ocean University is a full-time general undergraduate university in Jiangsu Province. The predecessor of the school was Huaihai University (under preparation) founded in 1985, and the Ministry of Education approved it as Huaihai Institute of Technology in 1989. From 1998 to 2002, the former Jiangsu Salt Industry School, Lianyungang Fisheries School and Lianyungang Chemical College, all of which had a history of more than 40 years, were successively merged into Huaihai Institute of Technology. In June 2019, the Ministry of Education approved the school to be renamed Jiangsu Ocean University. The history of marine higher education can be traced back to the Xinhailian Fisheries College (later renamed Lianyungang Fisheries School), which was founded in 1958. In July 2013, the State Council Academic Degrees Committee approved the school as a master's degree awarding institution. In July 2017, the school became a doctoral degree awarding project construction unit. The school is located in the core area of the "Belt and Road" intersection construction pilot area, the eastern bridgehead of the Eurasian Continental Bridge, and Lianyungang City, one of the first coastal open cities in the country. There are four campuses, namely Cangwu Campus, Tongguan Campus, Songtiao Campus and Xugou Campus. The main campus (Cangwu Campus) is located in the west foot of Huaguo Mountain, a national 5A-level scenic spot and the cultural birthplace of "Journey to the West". It covers a total area of 2,193.83 acres and a school building area of 657,100 square meters. There are more than 1,700 faculty and staff, more than 20,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 2,100 graduate students. The school has 20 colleges, and undergraduate majors cover 10 disciplines including engineering, science, management, literature, agriculture, law, economics, art, education and medicine. The school has a team of teachers who love higher education, have both teaching and research capabilities, attach equal importance to theory and practice, and are both moral and academic. There are 1,391 full-time teachers, including 572 with senior professional titles and 637 with doctoral degrees; 1 national high-level talent, 2 Jiangsu Provincial Teaching Masters, 1 Jiangsu High-level Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talent Introduction Plan, 1 Jiangsu Distinguished Professor, 3 Jiangsu Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, 3 Jiangsu Outstanding Youth Fund Winners, and 37 Jiangsu Double Entrepreneurship Doctors (World Famous Schools). 232 people have participated in provincial and ministerial talent projects such as Jiangsu Province's "333 High-level Talents" Training Project, Jiangsu University Qinglan Project, and Jiangsu Province's Six Talent Peaks; 5 excellent teaching teams of Jiangsu University Qinglan Project, and 11 Jiangsu Science and Technology Innovation and Talent Teams. 1 teacher won the first national advanced individual in textbook construction. 4 teachers were selected into the "Top 2% of Global Scientists List" in 2023. The school has hired a group of famous experts and scholars such as Academician Jiang Xingwei as part-time professors of the school. The school insists on talent cultivation as the center, and strives to cultivate comprehensive application-oriented talents with good moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and labor development, good foundation, high quality, strong ability, marine awareness, innovative spirit, and patriotism. The professional construction is closely connected with the development needs of the national and regional industries, and the adjustment and development efforts are continuously increased. At present, the school has 3 national characteristic majors, 2 national professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, 28 majors selected for the "Double 10,000 Plan" for the construction of first-class majors of the Ministry of Education, 7 majors have passed the engineering education professional certification of the Ministry of Education, and 6 majors have been selected as brand professional construction points for the integration of industry and education in Jiangsu Province. The school insists on taking the curriculum ideological and political education as the guide, and in accordance with the overall requirements of "broadening the foundation, focusing on application, and strengthening quality", it continuously expands the total number of courses, optimizes the course structure, reforms the teaching model, and actively creates first-class courses. Construct a first-class talent training curriculum system with a clear mapping relationship between students' values, comprehensive quality and ability structure, and has established 6 national first-class undergraduate courses, 27 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, and 16 provincial boutique online open courses. There are 33 key textbooks in Jiangsu Province, and 5 textbooks have been selected as the first batch of excellent undergraduate cultivation textbooks in Jiangsu Province. The school's education and teaching reform continues to deepen. It undertakes the "National Education System Reform Pilot Project-Comprehensive Credit System Reform" in Jiangsu Province. The project has passed the acceptance and appraisal hosted by the Provincial Department of Education and has been selected as a typical case of national education reform and innovation. The school was selected as a reserve college for the "14th Five-Year Plan" period to promote the project of a strong country in education. In the past five years, the school has won 1 first prize and 5 second prizes for national excellent teaching achievements, 2 first prizes and 10 second prizes for excellent teaching achievements in Jiangsu Province. The student dragon boat team won the Chinese University Dragon Boat Championships 4 times and the World University Dragon Boat Championships 3 times. In the past five years, our students have won 623 national awards and 1,662 provincial awards in various ranking competitions such as the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition, the National College Students' Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, and the China College Students' Engineering Practice and Innovation Ability Competition. More than 6,000 students have won awards. The school insists on scientific research and social services as its two wings, and strives to provide intellectual contributions and technical support for local economic and social development. According to the national strategic needs and regional development characteristics, the discipline structure is optimized and the discipline direction is condensed. Marine science is a dominant discipline in Jiangsu Province. Four disciplines, including applied economics, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, and pharmacy, are included in the Jiangsu Province's "14th Five-Year Plan" key discipline construction plan, and the engineering discipline has entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. The school currently has 7 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 12 professional master's degree authorization points. The school has built a number of scientific and technological research and service platforms with distinctive marine characteristics and strong disciplines. There are 1 postdoctoral research workstation, 29 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological innovation platforms such as provincial research institutes, technology innovation centers, key laboratories, engineering research centers, collaborative innovation centers, provincial military-civilian integration development think tanks, and provincial social science key research bases. In May 2021, the University Science and Technology Park of Jiangsu Ocean University was recognized as a national university science and technology park by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education. In recent years, it has won more than 60 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels and above, including 2 national science and technology awards. The school insists on opening up and international cooperation as a breakthrough, and strives to build a high-end platform for regional economic and social development and cultural exchanges. The school has signed education and scientific research cooperation agreements with many foreign universities, and maintains friendly exchanges with dozens of universities in the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and other countries. Cooperating with Makarov National Shipbuilding University of Ukraine, we jointly established a Sino-foreign cooperatively-run institution-Jiangsu Ocean University Makarov Marine Engineering College. The overseas study program for students is running well, and the scale of international students coming to the school is steadily increasing. The school has complete specifications and fully functional infrastructure and school conditions. The school has 12 provincial experimental teaching and practical education centers, 83,700 sets of various teaching and scientific research experimental instruments and equipment, with a total value of 466 million yuan. The library currently has more than 2.09 million paper books, more than 800 Chinese and foreign paper journals, more than 1.57 million electronic journals, more than 11.72 million dissertations, 40,000 hours of various audio and video, and 27 electronic document databases such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure, ScienceDirect, IEL, EBSCOhost, Springer-Link, etc., and 6 self-built marine special database sub-databases. The total area of indoor and outdoor sports venues in the school is 133,000 square meters. It has a large number of indoor and outdoor sports facilities such as the main stadium, the second stadium, the main gymnasium, the dragon boat training hall, the swimming pool and the water sports training ground to meet the needs of various types of sports teaching, sports training and group activities. The school is a national model unit for greening, with a green coverage rate of 50%, and an ecological, garden-like and energy-saving campus has basically taken shape. The school has successively won many honors such as the National Advanced Internal Audit Collective, the National Advanced Unit for Mass Sports, the National Advanced Unit for College Students' Social Practice, the Model Civilized Unit of Jiangsu Province, the Advanced Unit for Teacher Team Construction of Jiangsu Province, the Advanced University for Science and Technology Work of Jiangsu Province, and the Excellent Unit for Graduate Enrollment Management of Jiangsu Province.
