Jiangsu University of Science and Technology is located in Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province, a scenic national historical and cultural city. It is a general university with engineering as its main discipline and distinctive characteristics. It is a high-level university construction university in Jiangsu, an excellent school for undergraduate teaching work level assessment of the Ministry of Education, and a university in the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program. The comprehensive strength of the school ranks 130th among Chinese mainland universities in the third-party evaluation agency USNews 2023 World University Comprehensive Ranking, and ranks 137th among Chinese universities in the 2023 Soft Science China University Ranking. The school has a long history of running schools, with multiple sources and profound cultural heritage. The school originated from the Shanghai Private Dagong Vocational School in 1933. In 1953, the first shipbuilding secondary vocational school in New China, Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry School, was established. It moved to Zhenjiang in 1970, and was renamed Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Industry School in 1971. It was upgraded to Zhenjiang Shipbuilding College in 1978 and renamed East China Shipbuilding Industry College in 1993. The school was once under the management of the former China State Shipbuilding Corporation. In 1999, it was adjusted to be jointly built by the central government and Jiangsu Province, with Jiangsu Province as the main management. In the same year, Jiangsu Jianghai Trade School was incorporated. In 2000, the Sericulture Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences merged with the school. In 2004, it was renamed Jiangsu University of Science and Technology. In 2021, it was selected as a university in the Jiangsu High-level University Construction Peak Plan. The school is a university jointly built by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd. In 2023, the Fourth Party Congress of the school established the long-term goal of "building a distinctive internationally renowned high-level university in an all-round way". The school insists on educating people for the party and cultivating talents for the country. It is an industry-specific university with "ships, oceans, and sericulture" as its characteristic advantages and a complete training system for undergraduates, masters, and doctors. The school began to recruit and train undergraduates in 1978, obtained the right to confer master's degrees in 1993, and obtained the right to confer doctoral degrees in 2008. The school has more than 23,000 undergraduate students, more than 5,700 doctoral and master's students, and more than 700 international students with bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. There is also Jiangsu University of Science and Technology Suzhou Institute of Technology, with more than 6,300 students. There are currently Zhenjiang Changshan, Mengxi Campus and Zhangjiagang Campus and Shanghai Office, covering an area of 3,979 acres. As the only industry-specific university in Jiangsu Province that mainly serves the ship and marine engineering equipment industry, the school is one of the universities in the country with the most complete shipbuilding industry-related disciplines and majors, and has the advantages of shipbuilding characteristics, integrity and application. There are 4 postdoctoral research stations, 5 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 25 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 14 master's professional degree awarding categories, and 74 undergraduate majors. Four disciplines of engineering, materials science, chemistry, and computer science are among the top 1% of ESI disciplines in the world, and 11 disciplines are selected in the "2022 Soft Science China Best Discipline Ranking". There are currently 5 national defense specialty disciplines, 3 Jiangsu provincial college advantage disciplines, and 9 Jiangsu provincial "14th Five-Year Plan" key disciplines; 3 pilot majors of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", 21 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 15 national first-class undergraduate courses. The school has won 3 national teaching achievement awards, 17 provincial teaching achievement awards, and 7 provincial graduate education reform achievement awards; it has been approved for 4 "four new" construction projects of the Ministry of Education. The school has participated in the research and development of ultra-deepwater semi-submersible drilling platforms, the "Jiaolong" manned submersible, the "Struggler" full-sea manned submersible, the dynamic positioning and tracking system of the trailing suction dredger, luxury cruise ships, large container ships and other equipment. The digital design and manufacturing systems, high-efficiency welding equipment, and ship enterprise management software developed by the school are widely used in major ship companies. The ship logistics integrated support system is leading in China, and the diesel engines for lifeboats account for nearly 60% of the global market. The school's Sericulture Research Institute is the only national-level sericulture research institute in my country. It is the world's sericulture germplasm resource preservation and research center, sericulture technology research center, and sericulture international cooperation and exchange center. The school has developed and provided major sericulture varieties and mulberry planting and silkworm breeding technologies in China and even the world, and has won 16 national awards. During President Xi Jinping's visit to Cuba, the mulberry seeds presented to Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro came from the school.Jiangsu Shipbuilding Industry Corporation has always attached great importance to exchanges and cooperation with domestic and foreign countries, adhered to internationalization and open-style education, and continuously broadened its ways of running schools. The school hosts the China Shipbuilding Industry Engineer Continuing Education College. The school has been rated as a civilized unit in Jiangsu Province and a civilized campus in Jiangsu Province for many consecutive years.
