The school was founded in 1956 and was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education of the People's Republic of China. It is one of the first architectural specialized schools established in New China. In 1960, with the approval of the Jilin Provincial People's Committee, the school was named Jilin Institute of Architectural Engineering and began to provide undergraduate education. In 1997, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the former State Education Commission. In 2003, the school became a master's degree authorizing unit.
