Liaoning Shihua University is the first petroleum industry school in New China. It was founded in Dalian in 1950, moved to Fushun in 1953, and upgraded to Fushun Petroleum College in 1958. In February 2000, it was transferred from China Petrochemical Corporation to the leadership of Liaoning Provincial People's Government. In February 2002, it was renamed Liaoning Shihua University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In March 2010, Liaoning Provincial People's Government and PetroChina, Sinopec, and CNOOC signed a co-construction school agreement. In the 74 years since its establishment, the school has developed into a multidisciplinary university with petroleum and petrochemical as its characteristics, and coordinated development of eight major disciplines including engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, education, and art. In 2007, the school accepted the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education and won excellent results. In 2021, it was identified by the Ministry of Education as one of the seven national undergraduate education and teaching review and evaluation pilot universities in Northeast China. It successfully completed the new round of undergraduate education and teaching review and evaluation of the Ministry of Education, and exported a "demonstration sample" for the construction of applied universities across the country. The school is a training base for minority high-level backbone master's students and minority undergraduate preparatory students determined by the Ministry of Education, and a training base for undergraduate talents in short supply in the petrochemical industry in Liaoning Province. At present, more than 140,000 graduates have been trained, most of whom have become management and technical backbones in the national petroleum and petrochemical industry. The school adheres to the connotation-oriented development path with quality improvement as the core, establishes the central position of talent training, continuously optimizes the discipline and professional structure and the teaching staff, and greatly improves the school's operating conditions, which has effectively improved the school's operating level and comprehensive strength. The school covers an area of about 1.26 million square meters, with a total construction area of 850,000 square meters and a total library book resource of 347.The university has 18 colleges and more than 18,000 full-time students. The university is a first-class discipline (Class A) construction university in Liaoning Province, with 2 joint training doctoral programs, 14 first-level discipline master programs, 47 second-level discipline master programs, and 9 master's professional degree authorization categories in materials and chemical engineering, resources and environment, energy and power, electronic information, machinery, business administration (MBA), accounting (MPAcc), translation (MTI) and art (MFA). The three disciplines of engineering, chemistry and materials science are among the top 1% in the world in ESI. The school currently has 60 undergraduate majors, 13 of which are approved as national first-class undergraduate majors, 4 specialty majors, 6 pilot majors of the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program (including 1 master's degree), 1 comprehensive reform pilot major, and 11 majors that have passed the China Engineering Education Certification; 1 national curriculum ideological and political demonstration course, teaching team and teaching master, 3 national education and teaching projects, 6 national first-class courses; 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 2 engineering practice education centers, virtual simulation experimental teaching centers 2 projects; 16 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 advantage and characteristic major, 5 innovation and entrepreneurship education reform pilot majors, 11 application-oriented transformation pilot majors, 5 application-oriented transformation demonstration majors, 2 comprehensive reform pilot majors, 7 engineering talent training model reform pilot majors, 2 key support majors, 5 demonstration majors, 2 characteristic majors; 29 provincial experimental teaching, practice training and other centers and bases, 7 industrial colleges, 172 first-class courses, 9 resource sharing courses, 2 video open courses, and 2 bilingual teaching demonstration courses have been approved. Since 2013, it has won 50 provincial and above teaching achievement awards and 8 provincial excellent textbooks. Student innovation and entrepreneurship activities are widely carried out. In the past three years, students have won 714 national awards and 3,591 provincial and ministerial awards in subject competitions and scientific and technological innovation activities. In the eight rounds of the national college student competition rankings (undergraduate), our school ranks 285th in the country and 9th among Liaoning provincial universities. It has won the provincial innovation and entrepreneurship college, and the provincial maker space has been registered. It has been identified by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League as a college student KAB entrepreneurship education base and KAB entrepreneurship club university. Since 2020, the school's graduate employment rate has ranked among the top three provincial universities for four consecutive years. The school has twice won the first prize of the provincial employment work award and the provincial employment work advanced unit. It was praised by the Ministry of Education at the 2023 National College Graduate Employment and Entrepreneurship Work Conference. The school has a high-level faculty team with more than 1,500 faculty and staff, 485 teachers with senior professional titles, and 492 doctoral and master's supervisors. The school has introduced two dual-appointed academicians and two Yangtze River Scholars. The school continues to improve its scientific research level and has been approved for key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, major research plan projects, National Social Science Fund, National Key R&D Program and projects of the Ministry of Education. It won 1 China Patent Excellence Award for the first time, 1 first prize of China Standard Innovation Contribution Award (Standard Project), 1 Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Award, and 57 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards in the past five years. The school has focused on strengthening the construction of scientific and technological innovation platforms, and has built 1 national and local joint engineering laboratory, 39 provincial key laboratories, collaborative innovation centers, professional and technical innovation centers, research institutes, bases, think tanks and other platforms, 3 provincial and ministerial key research bases for humanities and social sciences, 1 provincial technology transfer demonstration center, 1 provincial pilot base, and 1 provincial popular science base. 7 scientific research platforms have been identified as the first batch of major scientific and technological platforms opened by universities in Liaoning Province. A petrochemical industry chain training base has been built, and the petrochemical intelligent manufacturing teaching practice innovation center with an investment of 100 million yuan has been approved as a central budget investment plan support project for the 2021 Education Power Promotion Project. A new research and development institution, Liaoning Petrochemical Industry Technology Innovation Research Institute, was jointly established with Fushun Municipal People's Government and Sinopec Fushun Petrochemical Research Institute. The school has established industry-university-research cooperation with more than 100 high-tech enterprises, and has signed agreements with more than 60 enterprises and research institutes to form a group of joint training and internship practice bases for graduate students, including 20 demonstration bases for joint training of professional degree graduate students in Liaoning Province and 1 Liaoning Graduate Innovation and Academic Exchange Center. It hosts two scientific journals, Journal of Liaoning Petrochemical University and Journal of Petrochemical Universities. The school actively participates in Liaoning's "One Circle, One Belt, Two Districts" regional development pattern and rural revitalization strategy, and has sent 343 professors and doctors to 253 enterprises and institutions across the province to provide scientific and technological services, providing more than 600 technical consultations for enterprises, training more than 1,000 personnel of various types, solving more than 400 technical problems, breaking through 3 national "stuck neck" technologies, and 5 achievements were recognized by the Provincial Department of Education as major landmark achievements of the province's first-class disciplines in 2019. It has jointly carried out undergraduate training programs such as "2+2, 1+2+1, 2+1+1" with world-renowned universities such as the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom; it has carried out "4+1" and "3+1+1" graduate training programs with the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom and the University of Regina in Canada respectively; it has jointly carried out doctoral training programs with Hirosaki University in Japan; the undergraduate education programs of chemical engineering and technology, electrical engineering and automation, and petroleum engineering have been approved by the Ministry of Education as Sino-foreign cooperative education projects; the school is the receiving unit for Chinese government scholarship students from the Ministry of Education.
