Nanchang University is a national "double first-class" construction university, a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Province, and a first-class university in Jiangxi Province. The university is located in the "Hero City" Nanchang City, with three campuses: Qianhu, Qingshan Lake, and Donghu. The Qianhu main campus covers an area of 4,264.54 acres and has a building area of 1.5 million square meters. The predecessors of the university, Jiangxi Medical College, Jiangxi University, and Jiangxi University of Technology, respectively trace their origins to the Jiangxi Public Medical School founded in 1921, the National Chung Cheng University founded in 1940, and the Jiangxi Institute of Technology founded in 1958. In 1993, the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government decided to merge Jiangxi University and Jiangxi University of Technology to form Nanchang University. In 1997, Nanchang University was listed as a key university in the national "211 Project" by the Ministry of Education. In 2004, it became a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the Jiangxi Provincial People's Government. In 2005, Nanchang University merged with the former Jiangxi Medical College to form the new Nanchang University. The leaders of the Party and the State, the Ministry of Education, and the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government attach great importance to the construction and development of the university. In October 2008, when Comrade Xi Jinping visited the school, he sent a heartfelt message that "Nanchang University has unlimited prospects". In 2018, the school became a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Province. In February 2021, the "Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of Jiangxi Province and the Long-Term Goals for 2035" clearly proposed "to run Nanchang University with the efforts of the whole province and strive to enter the ranks of world-class universities". The school currently has 42 teaching units, 13 disciplines, 91 undergraduate enrollment majors, 22 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 3 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, 18 postdoctoral research mobile stations; 49 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, and 35 master's professional degree authorization categories. The school has 5 directly affiliated hospitals and a total of 9 national key clinical specialties. The discipline of materials science and engineering was selected as a national "double first-class" construction discipline, and 6 disciplines were selected as provincial first-class disciplines. 14 disciplines entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking, among which agricultural science (mainly food science) entered the top 0.369% of the world; the food discipline ranked 7th in the "US News Global University Rankings". The school headquarters currently has 4,235 faculty and staff (including 2,687 full-time teachers and 1,589 senior titles), including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, 1 academician of the International Academy of Food Science, 10 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 10 winners of the National Excellent Youth Science Fund, and 126 national talents. There are 2 members of the discipline evaluation group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 2 national teaching teams, and 4 pilot projects for the construction of virtual teaching and research rooms. The "Silicon Substrate High-Efficiency GaN-Based Blue Light-Emitting Diode" project of Academician Jiang Fengyi's team won the first prize of the National Technological Invention Award in 2015 (this is the first first prize won by a local university since the establishment of the National Science and Technology Award). The results of the "Key Technology and Industrial Application of Fruit and Vegetable Probiotic Fermentation" by Academician Xie Mingyong's team won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2016. Based on the characteristic agricultural product resources of Jiangxi Province, the research results in the fields of probiotic fermentation of fruits and vegetables have reached the world-class level and formed a demonstration effect, and established my country's first special strain library for fruit and vegetable fermentation. The International Institute of Ordered Matter Science of the school has made new breakthroughs in the field of ferroelectrochemical research, published articles in high-quality journals such as Science, and won the first prize of the Natural Science Award of the 2022 Ministry of Education Higher Education Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award. The direct funding of the National Natural Science Foundation has exceeded 100 million yuan for seven consecutive years.
