Nanjing Institute of Physical Education was founded in 1956. It was formed by the merger of Nanjing Physical Education School, the Physical Education Department of Jiangsu Normal University and the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Cadre Training Class. It is the only independent sports institution of higher learning and an important provincial-level competitive sports institution in Jiangsu Province. The sports training base is a provincial key construction university co-managed by the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education.
