Nanjing Special Education Normal College was founded by the Ministry of Education. It is the only independent undergraduate college in China that focuses on training special education teachers and also trains professionals for the disabled. The school was founded in 1982 with the support of the United Nations Children's Fund to serve the cause of the disabled and the needs of special education in China. It was originally named Nanjing Special Education Normal School. The establishment of the school has opened up a precedent for special normal education in China. In 1997, the school was transferred to the management of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. In 2009, the school became a co-construction unit of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government and the China Disabled Persons' Federation. In 2015, the school was renamed Nanjing Special Education Normal College. The school currently has 9,005 full-time students (including more than 240 disabled students who are enrolled through single examinations). There are currently three campuses in Qixia, Jiangning and Pukou. The Nanjing Accessible Library is set up in the library, and the collection of Braille books ranks among the top domestic universities. The first educational history museum in China, the China Special Education Museum, has been built, including 7 indoor exhibition areas and 1 outdoor exhibition area. The school continues to deepen the reform of education and teaching, and is committed to cultivating special education talents who are capable of shouldering the great task of national rejuvenation. It has 10 colleges and 27 undergraduate majors, covering seven major disciplines including education, literature, science, engineering, management, medicine, and art. It has 4 key disciplines in Jiangsu Province during the "14th Five-Year Plan"; 2 first-class undergraduate major construction sites in national universities, 12 first-class undergraduate major construction sites in Jiangsu universities, 1 first-phase construction project of Jiangsu University Brand Major Construction Project, 1 Jiangsu Province Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program 2.0 professional construction project, 3 provincial-level industry-education integration majors, and 1 provincial-level industry-education integration base; 2 national-level boutique resource sharing courses, 4 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 21 provincial-level first-class courses, 3 provincial-level industry-education integration first-class courses, and 9 provincial-level online open courses. 12 provincial key textbooks have been approved. Won 2 national teaching achievement awards and 3 provincial-level teaching achievement awards. Undertake the Ministry of Education's Excellent Special Education Teacher Training Program project. It has 2 provincial experimental teaching and practical education centers; 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching project and 1 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching project. It has established a provincial college student innovation and entrepreneurship practice education center. In the 42 years since its establishment, the school has trained and supplied more than 30,000 special education and various specialized talents for the society. A large number of outstanding alumni have emerged, including Li Xiangjun, winner of the "National May 1st Labor Medal", Ge Huaqin, "National Model of Teaching and Educating", Ma Shanbo, "National Model Teacher", Cao Yan, "National March 8th Red Flag Bearer", "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Figure and Advanced Model Figure for the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone", and Liu Lingli, the annual figure who moved China. It is known as the "cradle of special education teacher training in China". The school's scientific research work is based on industry characteristics and serves government decision-making. In recent years, the school has taken the lead in establishing the "National Special Education Alliance for Primary, Secondary and High Schools"; as the main undertaking unit, it has developed the "Professional Standards for Special Education Teachers (Trial)", "Deaf School Compulsory Education Curriculum Standards", "Standards for Fostering Services for Intellectual, Mental and Severely Physically Disabled People of Employment Age", etc.; more than 10 achievements have been adopted by the central and local governments; the "Blue Book on Disabled People" and "Blue Book on Accessible Environment" have been compiled and published, which have produced extensive social impact and good social benefits. The school has established scientific research and innovation platforms such as the China Disabled People's Cause Development Research Base, the Jiangsu Provincial Decision-making Consulting Research Base, the Jiangsu Provincial University Philosophy and Social Sciences Key Research Base, the Jiangsu Provincial University Philosophy and Social Sciences Off-campus Research Base, and the Jiangsu Provincial University Key Construction Laboratory "Special Children's Disability and Intervention Technology Laboratory". In recent years, it has undertaken more than 20 national scientific research projects; more than 50 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects; and won more than 10 awards such as the Ministry of Education's Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award for Higher Education Institutions and the Jiangsu Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Outstanding Achievement Award. The school's teaching staff has a reasonable structure and excellent quality. There are 750 faculty members, 50% of full-time teachers hold senior professional and technical positions, 40% hold doctoral degrees, and there are more than 20 part-time graduate tutors. There are more than 100 experts who enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in the province, provincial famous teachers, training targets of the provincial "333 High-level Talent Project", high-level talents of the provincial "Six Talent Peaks", training targets of the "Qinglan Project" of Jiangsu Universities, provincial "Double Entrepreneurship Doctor", and provincial "Youth May Fourth Medal" winners. The school actively serves the country's opening-up strategy and conducts extensive international exchanges and cooperation. It signed an agreement with the Russian Union of Special Education Workers to establish the "China-Russia Special Education Alliance" and joined the "Jiangsu-Hong Kong-Macao University Cooperation Alliance" and the "Jiangsu-Russia University Cooperation Alliance" as the first batch of member units. It has established cooperative relations with 42 schools and institutions in 18 countries or regions such as the United States and France, forming a number of projects such as teacher-student exchanges, academic cooperation research, and cultural exchanges. The school adheres to the purpose of serving China's special education and the cause of the disabled, and upholds the school motto of "philanthropy and soul-shaping". It leaps forward in development and moves forward in innovation, and its comprehensive strength and social influence continue to improve. It has become the first batch of "pilot schools for higher integrated education for the disabled", "national training base for teachers of vocational education for the disabled", "national language and writing promotion base", "China Braille and Sign Language Promotion Service Center", "Jiangsu Special Education Development Guidance Center", "Jiangsu Special Education Teacher Training Center", "Jiangsu Disabled Persons Training Center", "Jiangsu Visually Impaired Education Examination Support Research Center". It has won the honorary titles of "National Advanced Special Education Unit", "National Language and Writing Standardization Demonstration School", "Jiangsu Civilized Unit", "Jiangsu Spiritual Civilization Construction Advanced Unit", "Jiangsu Colleges and Universities Advanced Grassroots Party Organization", "Jiangsu Higher Education Harmonious Campus", "Jiangsu Smart Campus", and "National General Language and Writing Promotion Advanced Collective".
