Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology is a national "double first-class" construction university and a Class A construction university in the Jiangsu High-level University Construction Peak Plan. The school was born to serve the national strategy and national economic construction needs of New China. In 1960, the School of Meteorology of Nanjing University (the predecessor of the school) was established, which was affiliated to the former Central (Military Commission) Meteorological Bureau. In 1963, it was independently established as Nanjing Meteorological College. In 1978, it was listed as a national key university. In 2000, it was transferred to the management of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. In 2004, it was renamed Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. Since 2007, the school has successively achieved co-construction by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, the China Meteorological Administration, the Ministry of Education, the State Oceanic Administration and other parties. It is now a central and local co-construction university mainly managed by Jiangsu Province. The main campus of the university is located in Nanjing Jiangbei New District, covering an area of more than 2,000 acres; the Jinniu Lake Industry-Education Integration Park is located in Jinniu Lake New District, Tianchang City, adjacent to Nanjing Liuhe District; the Wuxi campus is located in Wuxi Xidong New City, with Binjiang College (now renamed Wuxi College) and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology Wuxi Postgraduate Joint Training Base; in addition, the University Science and Technology Park and its Cultural Tourism Park are built in Nanjing Jiangbei New District, Liuhe District, and Yuhuatai District. There are about 36,830 full-time students, including about 28,300 ordinary undergraduates, about 7,300 master and doctoral students, and about 1,230 international students (degree students). The school has distinctive characteristics in running schools. Atmospheric science has been selected as a national "world-class discipline" construction discipline, and has achieved excellent results in the latest discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education. Meteorology is a national key discipline, and nine disciplines including earth science, engineering, computer science, environmental science and ecology, chemistry, agricultural science, materials science, general social science, and mathematics are among the top 1% of ESI disciplines in the world, among which earth science and computer science are among the top 1‰ of ESI global rankings. It has seven first-level doctoral degree authorization points in atmospheric science, environmental science and engineering, information and communication engineering, management science and engineering, mathematics, history of science and technology, and computer science and technology, 25 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 19 master's professional degree authorization points. The school currently has postdoctoral research stations in "Atmospheric Science", "Environmental Science and Engineering", "Mathematics", and "Management Science and Engineering", and 80 undergraduate majors are distributed in nine disciplines of science, engineering, literature, management, economics, law, agriculture, art, and education. The university has 24 professional colleges, as well as high-level educational institutions such as the International Education College, Reading College (China-UK cooperation), Watford College (China-Ireland cooperation), Changwang College (top-notch training), Longshan Academy (general training), Oufang College (innovation and entrepreneurship), College of Applied Technology, and College of Continuing Education. The school has a high-level faculty team. Among the more than 2,000 full-time teachers, there are 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 16 overseas academicians, 1 IAA academician, 117 national talents, and more than 500 provincial and ministerial talents. It currently has 50 teaching and research teams at the provincial and ministerial level and above, including the "Huang Danian-style Teacher Team of National Colleges and Universities" of the Ministry of Education, the National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Group, and the Jiangsu Double Innovation Team. The school adheres to the concept of integration of science and education and has rich teaching and research resources. It is the only provincial college in the country to be selected as the first batch of outstanding students in the basic disciplines of the Ministry of Education in atmospheric science. It has been approved as the Jiangsu Provincial Basic Discipline Outstanding Students Training Program 2.0 Base. The Artificial Intelligence Industry College has been approved as the first batch of modern industrial colleges in the country. There are 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national virtual simulation experimental center, 19 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and other practical teaching platforms. 30 majors were selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 16 majors were selected as provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 15 majors passed the engineering education professional certification, 2 majors passed the Royal Society of the United Kingdom and CLIP international certification, 3 majors were approved as provincial industry-education integration brand majors, and 3 majors were approved as provincial excellent engineer education and training program 2.0 majors. Focusing on the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents, the school has opened top classes in atmospheric science, Huawei experimental classes, Tencent experimental classes, JD experimental classes, joint training classes of the University of Science and Technology of China, joint training classes of the University of Social Sciences, Qi'anxin Talent Class, Hikvision Talent Class, etc. 31 courses were approved as the first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses, 41 courses were approved as provincial first-class courses, 3 provincial ideological and political demonstration courses and 4 provincial first-class industry-education integration courses were approved. One person was awarded the first national advanced individual in textbook construction. The university has more than 40 scientific research platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Meteorological Disasters, the International Joint Laboratory of Climate and Environmental Change, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Digital Forensics, the Ministry of Water Resources Key Laboratory of Hydrometeorological Disaster Mechanism and Early Warning (Preparatory), the China Meteorological Administration Key Laboratory of Aerosol and Cloud Precipitation, and the China Meteorological Administration Key Open Laboratory of Ecosystem Carbon Sources and Sinks (Cultivation). It has established two provincial collaborative innovation centers, namely the "Collaborative Innovation Center for Meteorological Disaster Forecast, Warning and Assessment" and the "Collaborative Innovation Center for Atmospheric Environment and Equipment Technology". Among them, the "Collaborative Innovation Center for Meteorological Disaster Forecast, Warning and Assessment" was selected as the first batch of provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation centers jointly built by the Ministry of Education. It has been approved as the first batch of scientist spirit education bases of the China Association for Science and Technology and the first batch of national science popularization education bases in 2021-2025. It has established the China Association for Science and Technology Science Popularization China Co-construction Base, the National Meteorological Science Popularization Education Base and 4 Jiangsu Province Science Popularization Education Bases. "Journal of Atmospheric Sciences" and "Journal of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology" are core Chinese journals of Peking University, and "Yuejiang Journal" is an extended journal of the AMI Comprehensive Evaluation (A Journal) of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Journals. The library has a collection of more than 2.65 million paper documents, nearly 60 databases, more than 1.99 million Chinese and foreign electronic books, more than 2.27 million electronic journals, and an annual subscription of 996 Chinese and foreign paper journals. It is the university library with the most complete atmospheric science documents in China. The school has a national university science and technology park and a national technology transfer demonstration center. The school has been approved as the "Weather Climate Change and Forecasting Technology" 111 Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Base, 42 national foreign expert projects, 2 foreign experts have won the highest honor of Jiangsu Province's foreign experts "Jiangsu Friendship Award", and 5 foreign experts have been selected for the Jiangsu "Foreign Experts Hundred People Program" list. Many research results have been published in top international academic journals such as "Nature" and "Science".
