The school originated from Tongzhou Minli Normal School founded by Mr. Zhang Jian, a famous modern Chinese industrialist and educator in 1902. It is one of the three major sources of Chinese teacher education. It was converted to a public school in 1952 and renamed Jiangsu Nantong Normal School the following year. Historically, it has integrated three century-old normal schools: Jiangsu Nantong Women's Normal School founded in 1905, Jiangsu Haimen Normal School founded in 1906, and Rugao Higher Normal School founded in 1902. It has a unique position in the history of Chinese teacher education and enjoys the reputation of "Red Normal School" and "Cradle of Teachers". In 2014, it was upgraded to a higher vocational college with the approval of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. The school currently has three campuses in Development Zone, Chongchuan and Rugao. The school covers an area of 567.9 acres, with a building area of 258,000 square meters, a total value of teaching and research equipment of nearly 100 million yuan, and a collection of nearly 920,000 books; there are 606 faculty and staff, 471 full-time teachers (including 171 teachers with senior professional titles, 347 teachers with master's degrees or above, including 20 doctors), 10,732 full-time students, and the average annual employment rate of students remains above 95%; the school has 10 secondary colleges, offering 30 majors such as preschool education, primary education, music education, art education, physical education, big data and financial management, and cloud computing technology application. Among them, the primary education major has passed the second-level certification of the Ministry of Education's normal majors. The school is a national, provincial, and municipal teacher training base. The school has rich cultural heritage, continuous red genes, remarkable teaching achievements, and many famous teachers. It has produced proletarian revolutionaries and revolutionary patriots such as Liu Ruilong and Wu Yalu, famous teachers such as Wang Guowei, Jiang Qian, and Zhu Dongrun, well-known experts such as Yuan Hanqing, Wei Jiangong, and Yan Zhida, as well as a large number of educational experts with national influence represented by Li Jilin, Wu Tianshi, and Hua Yinglong. Since its establishment, the school has trained nearly 120,000 graduates, including 5 national "Ten Thousand People Plan" teaching masters, 13 "Jiangsu People's Educators" training targets, 17 "Su Education Masters" training targets, 7 Su School new generation primary school teaching masters, and more than 170 special teachers, providing abundant talent resources for Nantong to become a nationally renowned education powerhouse and even for the long-term positive development of Jiangsu's basic education. Since the reform and opening up, the school has adhered to the tradition of "opening the trend first" and created many "national firsts", making many original contributions to the reform and development of my country's teacher education. In particular, in 1984, it took the lead in implementing the five-year normal education model in the country and created a new school system for secondary normal schools to train primary school teachers at the junior college level, which had a profound impact on the innovative development of China's normal education. In 2007, it took the lead in carrying out free targeted training for normal students among prefecture-level cities in the country, which was unique and well-known in the field of primary and preschool teacher education in my country. The project won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award in 2018. In line with the requirements of education modernization in the new era, in 2021, it will once again take the lead in carrying out a pilot project for targeted training of rural primary and preschool teachers at the undergraduate level and starting from junior high school for seven years, and strive to create a "Nantong model" of normal education with distinctive characteristics. Over the past two centuries, the teachers and students of the school have adhered to the school motto of "hard work, self-reliance, loyalty and honesty", adhered to the original intention of normal education, bravely shouldered the mission of educating people and serving the country, pioneered and forged ahead, and maintained a good development trend in teaching, scientific research, talent training, social services and other fields. The comprehensive strength has continued to improve, and has made important contributions to local basic education and regional economic and social development. It has now become a high-level normal college based in Nantong and facing the whole country, with moderate scale, reasonable structure, distinctive characteristics, outstanding concepts, high quality and obvious benefits.
