The predecessor of Ningxia Medical University was Ningxia Medical College established in 1958. In 1962, it was renamed the School of Medicine of Ningxia University. In 1972, Shanghai Railway Medical College moved to Yinchuan and merged with the School of Medicine of Ningxia University to rebuild Ningxia Medical College. In 2002, Ningxia Health School and Ningxia Nursing School were merged into Ningxia Medical College. In August 2008, the school was renamed Ningxia Medical University. In 2014, the School of Medicine of Ningxia Normal University was merged into Ningxia Medical University. So far, the school has become the only medical higher education institution in Ningxia. The school is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education of China, the Health Commission, and the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. There are more than 7,400 faculty and medical staff (including directly affiliated hospitals), including 1,042 full-time teachers. There are 113 doctoral supervisors and 887 master's supervisors (including 113 doctoral supervisors). There are 11,645 full-time students (including doctoral, master's, undergraduate, junior college, and international students). There are two campuses, Yanhu and Shuangyi, covering a total area of 1,700 acres, with 14 teaching institutions, 13 auxiliary teaching and research institutions, 14 non-affiliated hospitals, and 52 teaching practice hospitals. The school has four disciplines, namely medicine, science, management and engineering, and 21 undergraduate majors, including 8 national first-class majors in clinical medicine, medical laboratory technology, pharmacy, preventive medicine, nursing, stomatology, traditional Chinese medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine, 5 national characteristic majors, 9 autonomous region-level characteristic and advantageous majors, and 5 national first-class courses. There are 3 national teaching teams and 13 autonomous region-level teaching teams. There are 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers and 9 autonomous region experimental teaching demonstration centers. It has won 5 national teaching achievement awards. The school has 5 doctoral degree authorization points and 15 master's degree authorization points. There are 8 key disciplines of TCM of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 5 key disciplines at the autonomous region level, 4 advantageous and distinctive disciplines at the autonomous region level, 7 first-class disciplines in the autonomous region, clinical medicine and pharmacology and toxicology are among the top 1% in the world of ESI, 1 national key laboratory cultivation base jointly built by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 5 key laboratories of ministries (commissions), 2 collaborative innovation centers jointly built by the Ministry of Education, 10 key laboratories at the autonomous region level, 4 engineering technology centers at the autonomous region level, 10 clinical medicine research centers at the autonomous region level, and 13 research institutes at the autonomous region level. The school adheres to the school-running philosophy of "open schooling, connotation development, strengthening characteristics, and focusing on innovation" and the school motto of "cultivating virtues and helping people, and studying hard and refining skills", and strives for first-class. At present, it has developed into a higher medical school with coordinated scale, structure, quality, and efficiency, and has a certain influence and reputation among similar colleges and universities in the country.
