Northeast Agricultural University is a national "double first-class" university with "advantages in agricultural science, characteristics in life science and food science, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as agriculture, engineering, science, economics, and management". The school was founded in Harbin in 1948 and was originally called Northeast Agricultural College. It was the first general agricultural college founded by the Communist Party of China in the liberated areas. Liu Da, a well-known educator and the first mayor of Harbin, was the first president of the school. Since its establishment, the university has been successively affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Northeast Administrative Committee, the Ministry of Higher Education of the State, the Ministry of Agriculture of the State, the Heilongjiang Provincial Agricultural Committee, and the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Education. In 1981, it was identified as a provincial key university in Heilongjiang Province. In 1994, it merged with the Heilongjiang Provincial Agricultural Management Cadre College to form Northeast Agricultural University. In 1996, it became one of the key universities in the national "211 Project". In 2004, it became an excellent university in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In 2011, it became a university jointly built by the Heilongjiang Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. In 2013, it was selected as a university in the "Basic Capacity Building Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China". In 2017, it was selected as a national world-class discipline construction university. In 2022, it was selected as a national second round of "Double First-Class" construction university. The school has 17 colleges and 1 teaching department. There is 1 national world-class construction discipline, 3 national key disciplines, 3 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 2 key disciplines of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 12 Heilongjiang Province's advantageous and characteristic disciplines, 1 ESI global top 1‰ discipline field, and 8 ESI global top 1% discipline fields. The school is one of the first batch of universities in the country with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees. There are 10 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees and 21 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees; 2 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, 15 master's professional degree authorization categories; 10 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 2 postdoctoral research workstations; 77 undergraduate majors, including 10 national characteristic majors, 24 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 43 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction points, 1 major selected as a national comprehensive reform pilot, and 4 majors that have passed the engineering education professional certification. The school currently has 1,569 full-time teachers, including 356 professors and 567 associate professors, 1,065 with doctoral degrees, and 424 with master's degrees. There are 110 national talents of various types, 212 provincial and ministerial talents, 2 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, 4 second-batch agricultural scientific research innovation teams of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 2 national teaching teams, 3 Huang Danian-style teacher teams in national universities, 5 "leading teams" in Heilongjiang Province, and 354 doctoral supervisors. The school currently has 32,735 full-time students, including 7,628 graduate students, 24,781 undergraduates, and 326 foreign students. It is one of the first pilot universities for the "Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program". It has 2 national talent training model innovation experimental areas, 2 national excellent agricultural and forestry talent training projects, 34 national courses, 3 national curriculum ideological and political demonstration projects, 5 national new agricultural research and reform practice projects, 3 national new engineering research and reform practice projects, 2 national new liberal arts research and reform practice projects, 5 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, and a national off-campus practical education base for college students. There are 4 national-level agricultural science and education cooperation talent training bases, 10 national-level science and technology courtyards, 1 national agricultural professional degree graduate practice education demonstration base, 1 national agricultural professional degree graduate practice education characteristic base, 1 national virtual teaching and research room construction project, 5 national-level planning textbooks (first editor), 1 national textbook construction award excellent textbook (first editor), 1 national textbook construction advanced individual, 15 first Heilongjiang Province textbook construction award excellent textbooks, 1 national college student science and technology entrepreneurship internship base; 1 national "100" excellent doctoral dissertation and 4 nominations. Since its establishment, the school has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents, including "innovative" talents standing at the forefront of world science and technology, "compound" talents all over the country, and "application-oriented" talents active in the front line of agricultural production in Heilongjiang Province and the whole country. The school currently has 67 scientific research platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, including 1 national key laboratory (one of the supporting units), 1 national engineering research center, 2 national engineering technology research centers, 1 Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, 3 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 collaborative innovation center jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the province, 7 key laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 2 regional experimental stations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 3 agricultural science observation and experimental stations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 4 scientific research bases of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 1 innovative talent training base of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 base for the transformation and technology transfer of scientific and technological achievements of higher education institutions, and 1 national university science and technology park. It is one of the first batch of institutions to build the New Rural Development Research Institute of Higher Education. Since its establishment, the university has won more than 680 science and technology awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, including 37 national natural science awards, invention awards and science and technology progress awards; it has won the Governor's Special Award and Major Science and Technology Benefit Award of Heilongjiang Province 11 times, and has been awarded the honorary title of "Advanced Social Practice Group" by the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Education and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League 22 times, and has won the "Economic Revitalization Award" of Heilongjiang Province 3 times, and the "Grain Production Contribution Award" of Heilongjiang Province twice. It was awarded the honorary title of "Red Flag Group for Well-off Construction" in Heilongjiang Province. The school adheres to open education and is qualified to receive Chinese government scholarship students to study in China. It has a training base for studying abroad in Russia of the Ministry of Education and is the Chinese secretariat unit of the Forum of University Presidents in Northeast China and the Russian Far East and Siberia. Since its establishment, it has established contacts with 90 universities and scientific research institutions in 22 countries and regions such as Russia, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Ireland, and has carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation, and has initially formed the international exchange characteristics of "focusing on Northeast Asia and learning from others". The university covers an area of 4.964 million square meters, with a total construction area of 1.258 million square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 1.039 billion yuan. It is one of the first national demonstration units of conservation-oriented public institutions. The journals sponsored by the university include Journal of Northeast Agricultural University (Natural Science Edition), Journal of Northeast Agricultural University (English Edition), Journal of Northeast Agricultural University (Social Science Edition), China Dairy Industry, Heilongjiang Textile, China Potato, Feed Expo, Soybean Technology, Dairy and Human, and Agricultural Economy and Management, which are publicly distributed at home and abroad. The university attaches great importance to party building, ideological and political work, and spiritual civilization construction.
