The majestic Northeast Normal University has its roots in Yan'an. On October 25, 1945, Chairman Mao Zedong met with the main leaders of Yan'an University and instructed the school to move to the Northeast to establish a "new Northeast University". In February 1946, Northeast University was founded in Benxi, Liaoning Province. It was the first comprehensive university established by the Communist Party of China in the Northeast. In July 1949, it was located in Changchun, Jilin Province. In April 1950, it was renamed Northeast Normal University. In September 1996, it became one of the first batch of key universities in the national "211 Project". In June 2004, the Graduate School was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2007, it was selected as a university for the construction of the national "985 Project" teacher education advantage discipline innovation platform. In September 2017, it was selected as the first batch of national "Double First-Class" construction universities. The school is run in two districts with a full range of disciplines. The school currently has a free campus and a Jingyue campus. There are more than 15,000 full-time undergraduate students, more than 15,000 postgraduate students and more than 3,000 doctoral students, and more than 700 international students. There are more than 1,700 full-time teachers, including 560 professors and 657 associate professors. The school has 21 colleges (departments), and the discipline and professional system covers 11 disciplines, including 82 undergraduate majors, 46 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, and 3 bases of the Ministry of Education's Basic Discipline Outstanding Student Training Program 2.0; 24 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 37 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 1 doctoral professional degree category, 21 master's professional degree authorization points; 22 postdoctoral research mobile stations. The school has 6 national "double first-class" construction disciplines: Marxist theory, education, world history, chemistry, statistics, and materials science and engineering, and the number of selected disciplines ranks 19th in the country. There are 5 national key disciplines: ideological and political education, principles of education, world history, cell biology, and ecology. In the fourth round of subject evaluation by the Degree Center of the Ministry of Education, 6 subjects were rated as Class A (including 1 subject as A+) and 15 subjects were rated as Class B. The school has distinct characteristics and remarkable results. The school is based on education and teaching. Over the past 70 years since its establishment, it has formed a distinctive school-running feature of "serving basic education" and is known as the "cradle of people's teachers". In the 1950s, Cheng Fangwu, a famous educator and former principal of our school, proposed the idea of serving primary and secondary education, and the school pioneered the correspondence education of higher normal schools in China; in the 1980s, the school took the initiative to serve rural basic education and embarked on a "Changbai Mountain Road" that is well-known in the basic education community; in the 1990s, the "Excellent Teacher Project" was implemented to train excellent teachers for basic education; in the new century, the "Educator Training Project" was launched to explore the "UGS New Model of Teacher Education", and it was approved as the only provincial and ministerial co-construction collaborative innovation center for teacher education in the country. The "Excellent Teacher Project" and the "UGS New Model of Teacher Education" have successively won the first prize of national teaching achievements in higher education. The National Basic Education Experimental Center, the Ministry of Education Kindergarten Principal Training Center, and the Ministry of Education Northeast Normal Teacher Training Center are located in our school. Scientific research strengthens the school and has fruitful results. The school takes scientific research as the foundation of strengthening the school. It has built 18 national and ministerial-level scientific and technological innovation platforms such as the National Engineering Laboratory, the National Field Science Observation and Research Station, the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory, the National Center for Applied Mathematics, the National International Joint Research Center, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory, and the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, as well as 10 ministerial-level humanities and social science research platforms such as the Ministry of Education Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences and the Ministry of Education Country and Regional Research Center. In recent years, the research results have won 4 second prizes in the National Natural Science Award, including 2 in the field of materials science, 1 in the field of statistics, and 1 in the field of chemistry; and won 4 first prizes in the 7th and 8th Outstanding Scientific Research Achievements Award for Higher Education Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences), including 3 in the field of history and 1 in the field of Marxist theory. Open education helps development. The school has established cooperative and exchange relations with 275 universities and research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Korea, Japan, and Russia. The school has established 6 higher education subject innovation and intelligence introduction bases and 4 Confucius Institutes. It has established the Rutgers-Newark College of Northeast Normal University in cooperation with Rutgers New Jersey State University in the United States, and led 12 universities in China and Mongolia to establish the "China-Mongolia University Alliance". The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other central ministries and commissions have established the "International Chinese Teacher Training Base", "Chinese Language Education Base", "Education Aid Base" and "China-ASEAN Education Training Center" in our school. The Preparatory School for Chinese Students Going to Japan, co-organized by the Chinese and Japanese governments and located in our school, is an important base for serving the national talent-strengthening strategy and promoting cultural exchanges between China and Japan. The school has a group of famous experts and scholars at home and abroad. Poet and lyricist of "The March of the Chinese People's Liberation Army" Gong Mu (Zhang Songru), writers Xiao Jun and Wu Boxiao, literary historian Yang Gongji, linguist Sun Changxu, historians Li Xun, Ding Zemin and Lin Zhichun, educator Chen Yuanhui, musicians Ma Ke and Lu Ji, pathologist Bai Xiqing, mathematician Zhang Dexin, nuclear physicist Wang Lin, geographer Ding Xizhi, ornithologist Fu Tongsheng, biologist Hao Shui, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one of the founders of school sports in New China Yang Zhongxiu, large-scale group gymnastics choreographer and artist Yang Ruixue, "red theorist" Zheng Derong and other famous scholars have all worked and lived here. Over the past 70 years since its establishment, the school has inherited the red gene and carried forward the spirit of "strengthening teachers to serve the country, seeking truth and creating". It has trained and sent more than 300,000 graduates of all levels and types to the country. A large number of outstanding talents have stood out in the field of education, such as Lu Jiaxi, a teacher at Baotou No. 9 Middle School who won the first prize of the National Natural Science Award for solving the world-famous mathematical problem, Feng Zhiyuan, a teacher who moved China, Guo Lihua, a national model teacher, Gao Hang and Dou Guimei, national models of teaching and educating people, and Ma Xianhua, one of the top ten teachers in the country.
