【History of School】Northwest Normal University is a key university jointly established by the Gansu Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education. Its predecessor was the National Peking Normal University, which originated from the Normal School of the Imperial University of Peking established in 1902. It was changed to the "National Beijing Higher Normal School" in 1912 and the "National Peking Normal University" in 1923. After the "July 7" Incident in 1937, the National Peking Normal University, the National Peking University and the Beiyang Institute of Technology, which moved west at the same time, formed the Northwest United University. The National Peking Normal University was reorganized as the Education College under the Northwest United University, and later changed to the Normal College. In 1939, the Normal College of Northwest United University was set up independently and renamed the National Northwest Normal College. It moved to Lanzhou in 1941. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the National Northwest Normal College continued to run schools in Lanzhou, and at the same time, Peking Normal University (now Beijing Normal University) was restored. Before 1958, the school was one of the six key normal colleges directly under the Ministry of Education. In 1958, it was placed under the leadership of Gansu Province and renamed Gansu Normal University. In 1981, it was renamed Northwest Normal College. In 1988, it was named Northwest Normal University. In 2020, it was listed as a provincial university supported by the Gansu Provincial People's Government to enter the ranks of national first-class universities. [Party Building] The school insists on using Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era to guide the overall work, puts political construction in the first place, comprehensively promotes the party's political construction, ideological construction, organizational construction, style construction, and discipline construction, and runs through the whole process of system construction to continuously improve the quality of school party building work. At present, the school party committee has 33 second-level party committees, 3 directly affiliated party branches, and 1 student community party working committee; there are 283 grassroots party branches. Among them, there are 101 party branches for faculty and staff, 157 party branches for students, and 25 party branches for retired and retired people. There are 7,701 members of the Communist Party of China, including 1,919 active faculty members, 5,137 student members, and 645 retired staff members. [Organizational Settings] In 1985, the Ministry of Education established the "Northwest Minority Teacher Training Center" directly under the Ministry of Education and established in the system of higher education institutions, and implemented a two-in-one management system of "two brands and one team" with the school. In 1987, the State Council established the "Tibetan Teacher Training Center" in the school. In 2012, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council established the "Northwest Normal University Chinese Education Base" based on the school. In 2020, it was approved as the "National Teacher Development Collaborative Innovation Experimental Base" and the "Ministry of Education Teacher Ethics Construction Base". In 2021, it was approved as the "National Language and Character Promotion Base". The school currently has 26 secondary colleges (65 departments, 3 teaching departments), and 3 Confucius Institutes. There are 1 national-local joint engineering laboratory, 1 national research institute, 4 national teaching teams, 1 national professional and technical personnel continuing education base, 1 key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 strategic research base of the Ministry of Education, 7 research centers of the Ministry of Education, 2 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, 3 other ministerial research centers, 5 key laboratories of Gansu Province, 1 basic discipline research center of Gansu Province, 9 basic research innovation groups of Gansu Province, 1 engineering technology research center of Gansu Province, 9 engineering research centers (engineering laboratories) of Gansu Province, 1 major research base of philosophy and social sciences in Gansu Province, 1 research center of Gansu National Cultural Park, 3 international science and technology cooperation bases of Gansu Province, 3 joint laboratories of Gansu Province, 1 industrial research institute of Gansu universities, 7 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of Gansu universities, 5 new think tanks of Gansu universities, 3 collaborative innovation centers of Gansu Province, and 21 other provincial research platforms. [Talent Training] Since its independent establishment, the school has trained more than 300,000 students of various types. The school recruits students from 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country. There are currently 30,438 students of all types, including 18,520 undergraduates, 1,087 doctoral students, 10,557 master's students, and 274 international students. Since 1992, the school has implemented six consecutive phases of undergraduate teaching reform projects, and is currently implementing the seventh phase of the project. In 2003, the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching work level evaluation received an excellent rating; in 2008, the Ministry of Education's English undergraduate major evaluation received an excellent rating. In 2010, it was rated as an advanced unit of art education in schools across the country. [Teachers] The school currently has 2,637 faculty members, including 360 senior professional titles, 844 associate senior professional titles, 1,060 with doctoral degrees, and 1,011 with master's degrees. There are 1,765 full-time teachers, including 335 professors (researchers) and 687 associate professors (associate researchers). There are 227 doctoral supervisors (including 33 part-time supervisors outside the school), 2,201 master's supervisors (including 105 part-time supervisors outside the school and 971 practical supervisors outside the school). 131 people were selected for national and ministerial talent projects, and 486 people were selected for provincial talent projects. The school has hired more than 300 well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad as special or part-time professors. Famous professors such as Li Zheng, Li Jinxi, Yuan Dunli, Dong Shouyi, Li Jianxun, Hu Guoyu, Lv Sibai, Kong Xianwu, Chang Shuhong, Chen Yong, Huang Zhou, Peng Duo, Guo Jinxi, Li Bingde, Jin Baoxiang, Jin Shaoying, and Nan Guonong have taught in the school. [Discipline and Major] The school is one of the first units determined by the State Council to have the right to confer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. There are 11 first-level doctoral programs in education, chemistry, Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, mathematics, physics, geography, psychology, biology, art, and Marxist theory, and 2 professional doctoral authorization categories in education and fine arts and calligraphy; 28 first-level master's programs, 1 second-level master's program, and 24 professional master's authorization categories. There are 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines in curriculum and teaching theory and ancient Chinese literature, 2 key supported disciplines of the National First-Class Discipline Breakthrough Project of Provincial Universities in education and bamboo slips, 11 provincial first-class disciplines, and 36 provincial key disciplines. Four disciplines, namely chemistry, materials science, engineering, and environmental science/ecology, are in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking. There are 82 general undergraduate majors (including 9 national characteristic majors, 29 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and 15 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites), and a relatively reasonable degree authorization system has been formed, covering 10 disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. 【Scientific Research】The school has strong scientific research capabilities and has always attached great importance to the integration of industry, academia and research. Social sciences have outstanding advantages and distinctive characteristics in the fields of ancient Chinese literature, Northwest history and geography, curriculum and teaching theory, ethnic education, ancient book compilation, Dunhuang studies, etc. Natural sciences have in-depth research in the fields of polymer chemistry and physics, basic mathematics, atomic and molecular physics, educational technology, etc. The school has won a number of high-level scientific research awards. In recent years, it has won nearly 800 awards at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, including 1 National "Five One Project" Award, 11 Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Sciences Research Outstanding Achievement Awards (including 1 first prize), and 11 National Education Science Research Outstanding Achievement Awards (including 3 second prizes and 1 Lifetime Achievement Award). It won 2 third prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 second prize in the Ministry of Education Higher Education Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award (Science and Technology), 83 provincial science and technology awards (including 2 first prizes in natural sciences), 2 provincial patent awards, 640 provincial social science outstanding achievement awards, and 45 provincial Dunhuang Literature and Art Awards. 【International Cooperation】The school pays attention to international cooperation and exchanges, and actively promotes the international development strategy. It has established long-term and stable strategic cooperation relations with foreign universities and universities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, such as Southern Illinois State University, Belarusian State Pedagogical University, University of Auckland, New Zealand, Putra University, Malaysia, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, University of Macau, and Tsinghua University in Taiwan. The school covers an area of 1,514 acres, the Yunting campus covers an area of 834 acres, the Zhixing campus covers an area of 566.6 acres, and the Lantian student apartment covers an area of 55.6 acres. There is also an ecological training base of 2,413.5 acres. The total planned building area of the school is 115.180,000 square meters, including 331,900 square meters of various teaching and auxiliary rooms. The total value of various teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 702.0589 million yuan, and there are 4.2888 million volumes of various literature resources.
